TEMPE, Ariz. - Playing its first games ever in the new Alberta B. Farrington Stadium, the ninth-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils (4-0) defeated 13th-ranked Nebraska (1-3), 7-1 and 18th-ranked South Carolina (0-4), 2-1.
Against Nebraska, Arizona State posted a pair of runs in the first, second and third innings to forged to a commanding 6-0 lead. Freshman Sara Kahler launched her first career homerun over the right field wall. On the afternoon, Kahler went 2 for 4 with a run and three RBIs. Sophomore Nichole Thompson also had a good day, going 2 for 4 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs.
Erica Beach (2-0) continued her stellar pitching, allowing only six hits with one unearned run.
In the night cap against 18th-ranked South Carolina, Arizona State jumped ahead 1-0 when freshman Kara Brun doubled in Thompson. However, South Carolina would tie the game when leadoff hitter Megan Donohoo cracked a solo shot over the left field wall. ASU then took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, enough for Kirsten Voak (2-0) to seal the win. Voak allowed six hits, one run, while striking out five. Voak also went 2 for 3 with a RBI.
Arizona State will close out the Fiesta Bowl Tournament with games against 16th-ranked Massachusetts at 10:00 a.m. and Cal State Fullerton at 12:00 p.m. Both games will be played at the Rose Mofford Sports Complex.
