Senior Mitch Jones hit his ninth homer of the season as No. 17 Arizona State completed a three-game sweep of Duke with a 10-1 victory this afternoon at Packard Stadium. The Sun Devils improve to 11-2 on the year while Duke falls to 1-5.
ASU got on the board first scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. After Jonah Martin led off the inning with a walk, Jeff Duncan bunted down the thirdbase line for a hit. With runners on first and second, Casey Myers hit a three-run homer to leftfield. Mitch Jones followed with a solo blast to leftfield for the final run of the inning.
The Sun Devils would pick up three runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Senior Will Waldrip (3-0) pitched six strong shutout innings, allowing only four hits while striking out six. Taking the loss for the Blue Devils was starter Steve Schroeder (0-2) who allowed four runs on five hits in three innings of work.
Offensively for ASU, Jeff Duncan went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI while Casey Myers had a 2-for-4 day at the plate with four RBI. Mitch Jones also turned in a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI.
For the Blue Devils, Gideon Thompson, Jeff Becker, Scott Grossi, Brian Patrick, Doug Bechtold and David Mason each collected a hit for Duke.
ASU has now played 267 consecutive games without being shutout, the longest active streak at the Div. I level.
The Sun Devils will play on Wednesday, February 16 at Packard Stadium as they host an ASU alumni team at 7 p.m.
