No. 17 Arizona State Baseball Defeats Duke 7-1

Chad Pennington allowed only two hits over five shutout innings as No. 17 Arizona State defeated Duke University 7-1 this afternoon at Packard Stadium. The Sun Devils improve to 10-2 on the year while Duke falls to 1-4.

Arizona State has now played 266 consecutive games without being shutout. It is currently the longest active streak in NCAA Division I baseball. ASU passed Wichita State who came in at 265. The 266 games played without being shutout in seventh longest in NCAA history.

ASU once again jumped out early scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Jonah Martin opened the game with a double down the rightfield line. After moving to third on a groundout by Brooks Conrad, Jeff Duncan walked to put runners at first and third. Casey Myers doubled to right centerfield, scoring Martin and Duncan.

The Sun Devils would pick up three more runs in the fourth and two more in the eighth.

Starter Chad Pennington (2-0) picked up the win pitching five shutout innings allowing only two hits and striking out six. Reliever Franco Pezely recorded his first save on the year, allowing only one hit over three innings of work.

For Arizona State, designated hitter Brendan Hines went 2-for-4 at the plate, hitting his fifth homerun of the season - a two-run shot to centerfield. Leftfielder Mitch Jones hit his eighth homer of the season in a 1-for-4 effort. Casey Myers had a 1-for-2 day at the plate with two walks while Jeff Phelps went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Taking the loss for the Blue Devils, was starter Ryan Caradonna who allowed five runs on six hits in five innings of work. Scott Grossi, Troy Caradonna and Larry Broadway collected one hit a piece for Duke.
