Lefty Jon Switzer pitched seven shutout innings to give No. 17 Arizona State a 12-0 victory over the Duke Blue Devils this evening at Packard Stadium. ASU improves to 9-2 on the year, while Duke falls to 1-3.
The Sun Devils jumped on the board early, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jonah Martin led off the inning with a hit by pitch. After Martin stole second, Jeff Duncan singled to left. Duncan stole second. With runners on second and third, Casey Myers doubled to right center, scoring Martin and Duncan. Mitch Jones walked. Brendan Hines grounded out to the first baseman, moving Myers and Jones over. Brooks Conrad singled to right to score Myers and Jones. Jeff Phelps doubled down the leftfield line scoring Conrad. After Mel Stocker flied out to leftfield, Dennis Wyrick hit an infield single. Wyrick stole second and Phelps advanced home on the throw, scoring the final run of the inning.
Picking up the win for the Sun Devils was starter Jon Switzer (3-0) who pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only two hits. Reliever Robby Milner pitched 2.0 innings, allowing only one hit, to preserve the shutout.
Taking the loss for the Blue Devils was starter Patrick Hannaway (0-2) who lasted 1/3 of an inning, giving up six runs on four hits. Second baseman J.D. Alleva went 2-for-4 on the evening while designated hitter had a 1-for-2 day at the plate.
ASU's Casey Myers went 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored. Conrad, Phelps and Wytrick each had two hits for the Sun Devils. Leftfielder Mitch Jones hit his seventh homerun of the season as well.
