TEMPE, Ariz. - After nearly four exciting hours of action, the 12th-ranked Arizona State women's tennis team (2-1, 1-1 Pac-10) were defeated by the sixth-ranked UCLA Bruins (3-1, 1-1 Pac-10), 6-3 today at the Robson Player Facility.
In singles competition, UCLA won four of the matches and ASU won two matches with three of the matches extending into the third set. In doubles action UCLA claimed two of three wins for a 6-3 final.
On the singles fifth court freshman Mhairi Brown dispatched UCLA's Annica Cooper, 6-1, 7-6, (4). After going to the third set on the sixth court, junior Celena McCoury dropped UCLA's Petya Marinova, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0. UCLA won on courts one, two, three and four, while the Sun Devils picked up wins on courts five and six.
In doubles play, the ASU tandem of Giardino and Palme moved their undefeated overall record to 4-0 with an 8-3 win over UCLA's team of Marinova and Zana Zlebnik. UCLA snagged doubles wins of 8-5 and 8-4 on courts one and two respectively.
Up next ASU will host Tulsa on Saturday, February 5 at 12:00 p.m. at the Robson Player Facility.
