The 22nd-ranked ASU baseball team remained undefeated with a 14-2 victory over Brigham Young this afternoon at Packard Stadium. The Sun Devils improve to 6-0 on the year while BYU falls to 0-4.
Arizona State hitters put the game away early scoring seven runs in the third inning. With one out, shortstop Dennis Wyrick bunted for a base hit to get things started. Rightfielder Jonah Martin tripled to right centerfield, scoring Wyrick. Junior Jeff Duncan would single to leftfield, scoring Martin. First baseman Casey Myers was hit by pitch to put runners on first and second for senior Mitch Jones. Jones hit a homerun to leftfield, scoring three runs. After third baseman Jeff Phelps walked, sophomore Brooks Conrad tripled to centerfield, scoring Phelps. Conrad would steal home to score the final run of the inning.
The last ASU player to steal home was Mark Ernster against Cal State Fullerton in 1999. ASU would score again in the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings to put the final score at 14-2.
Starting pitcher Chad Pennington pitched 6.0 strong innings to get the win on the mound. Pennington allowed six hits, one earned run, two walks and seven strikeouts. Reliever Drew Friedberg picked up the save, going 3.0 shutout innings, allowing three hits with four strikeouts.
For the Devils, Casey Myers went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Mitch Jones had a 1-for-5 effort with three RBI. Dennis Wyrick went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI.
Taking the loss for the Cougars was starter Sean Noorda, who only lasted 2.2 innings, giving up five hits, seven runs with one walk and three strikeouts.
BYU first baseman Craig Peterson went 2-for-4 with a run scored while catcher Michael Davies had a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a RBI.
