TEMPE, Ariz. - After nearly four exciting hours of action, the 12th-ranked Arizona State women's tennis team (2-0, 1-0 Pac-10) beat the 10th-ranked University of Southern California Trojans (2-1, 0-1 Pac-10), 6-3 today at the Robson Player Facility.
In singles competition, each team won three matches with four of the matches extending into the third set. Heading into doubles with the dual tied at three apiece, Arizona State took charge by sweeping all three doubles for a 6-3 final.
On the singles first court, ASU sophomore Allison Bradshaw dispatched the fourth-ranked player in the country in USC's Jewel Peterson, 6-2, 6-4. USC's Anita Loyola tied the dual at one when she defeated Celena McCoury on the fifth court, 6-2, 6-2. However, the next four matches would all go the three-set distance. USC won on courts three and six, while the Sun Devils picked up wins on courts two and four.
In doubles play, the ASU tandem of Bradshaw and McCoury moved their undefeated record to 9-0 with an 8-6 win over the 39th-ranked team of Tiffany Brymer and Kara Warkentin. ASU clinched the dual on the third doubles court, where the duo of Kerry Giardino and Karin Palme defeated Jacqui Boyd and Peterson, 8-6. On the second court ASU's freshmen team of Mhairi Brown and Megan Yeats improved their overall, record to 9-1 with a tight 9-8 (0) tiebreaker win over Loyola and Veronika Safarova.
Up next, Arizona State will stay in Pac-10 action, hosting sixth-ranked UCLA on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
