ASU Baseball Defeats Florida Atlantic 30-4

Sophomore Brooks Conrad hit two homeruns and collected six RBI as Arizona State defeated Florida Atlantic 30-4 this afternoon at Packard Stadium. The 30 runs scored is the most by a Sun Devil team since 1978. ASU improves to 5-0 on the season, while FAU falls to 1-1.

Both teams got off to a quick start with Florida Atlantic scoring two runs in the top of the first. ASU answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning.

After Jonah Martin led off the inning with a walk, Jeff Duncan reached on a fielder's choice. He then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Casey Myers hit his first homer of the season to right field, to score the first two runs. Mitch Jones would follow Myers with a solo shot to right. After Jeff Phelps struck out for the second out, Brooks Conrad hit the third homer of the inning, a towering shot over the scoreboard in left centerfield.

The Devils would score in bunches after that: five runs in the third, 10 runs in the fifth inning, two runs in the seventh and nine in the eighth inning.

ASU reliever Will Waldrip picked up the win for the Devils, going 1.0 innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout. Freshman Dennis Sarfate was credited with a save, going 4.0 innings, allowing only one hit, two walks with seven strikeouts.

Conrad would finish the day going 3-for-5 with six RBI and five runs scored. Catcher Casey Myers went 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored.

Starter Carmen Cali took the loss for the Owls, lasting only 2.0 innings while giving up nine runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

For FAU, third baseman Anthony Mongelluzzo turned in a 2-for-4 performance with one RBI.

Arizona State will face Brigham Young (0-2) tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Packard Stadium in continued action at the Tempe Diablos Classic. Florida Atlantic will take on BYU at 11 a.m. at Packard as well.
