No. 22 ASU Baseball Outlasts BYU To Pick Up 8-7 Win.

Senior leftfielder Mitch Jones doubled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as Arizona State baseball notched an 8-7 win over Brigham Young this afternoon at Packard Stadium. ASU improves to 4-0 while the Cougars fell to 0-1.

BYU got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning but ASU answered with two runs in the second. The game see-sawed back and forth until the two teams where all tied up heading into the ninth.

After shutting down the BYU hitters in the top of the ninth, the Sun Devils came to bat. Centerfielder Jeff Duncan led off with a double down the leftfield line. After Casey Myers popped up to the second baseman, Jones doubled to rightfield, scoring Duncan for the game-winning run.

Reliever Franco Pezely picked up the win, pitching 1.0 innings with two key strikeouts in the top of the ninth.

For the Devils, Duncan went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Shortstop Dennis Wyrick had a 1-for-4 effort with three RBI while Jones turned in a 1-for-3 performance with two runs scored and an RBI.

Taking the loss for the Cougars, was reliever Nate Fernley who lasted 4.0 innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out two.

Shortstop Seth King went 2-for-4 with a run scored while designated hitter David Rock went 2-for-5 with two RBI. BYU had six stolen bases on the afternoon.

Arizona State hosts Florida Atlantic on Friday at 3 p.m. at Packard Stadium in continued baseball action. BYU will play FAU in an 11 a.m. game at Packard as well. For ticket information, please call the ASU ticket office at 480-965-2381.
