TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th-ranked Arizona State women's tennis team began the 2000 dual season by shutting out 27th-ranked New Mexico, 9-0, this afternoon at the Robson Player Facility. The Sun Devils dominated the dual, not losing a set.
On the first court, sophomore All-American Allison Bradshaw quickly dispatched New Mexico's Ana Figanovic, who is ranked 44th in the country, 6-3, 6-1. Minutes later on the second court, ASU's Karin Palme defeated Ashley Hedberg, 6-3, 6-2.
Additionally, a pair of Arizona State freshmen made successful debut on courts five and six. Both had little trouble winning their matches with Megan Yeats posting a victory over the Lobos' Dominika Gerwin, 6-3, 6-2, while just seconds later Mhairi Brown notched a win over New Mexico's Neza Kurnik, 6-2, 6-1.
The dual clincher for the Sun Devils occurred on the fourth court where junior Faye DeVera downed Nicoleta Spilca, 6-2, 6-4. ASU senior Kerry Giardino finished off the singles competition with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Natalla Alekhova on the third court.
In doubles action, ASU's duo of Bradshaw and Celena McCoury won their seventh straight match by downing Figanovic and Kurnik, 8-4 on the first court. The freshmen tandem of Brown and Yeats teamed up to win on the second court over Gerwin and Hedberg, 8-3, while Giardino and Palme closed out the dual with an 8-4 win over New Mexico's Courtney Choate and Caroline Pollock.
Arizona State will continue its home stand with a dual against 10th-ranked USC on Friday, January 28 at 1:30 p.m. and against sixth-ranked UCLA on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
