TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 16 Arizona State wrestling team fell to 3-4 overall with losses at Oklahoma State and Oklahoma over the weekend. Battling a number of injuries and wrestling without No. 10 Michael Kawamura at 125 pounds and No. 11 Quinn Foster at 149, the Sun Devils dropped a 39-0 decision against the fourth-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys on Friday night and a 23-10 decision against the No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday night.
Oklahoma State head coach John Smith, the brother of ASU head coach Lee Roy Smith, moved into a tie for fourth place on the all-time OSU coaching lists with the 39-0 shutout.
Junior Steve Blackford picked up just his second loss of the season in a tight 5-3 decision against Oklahoma State's Ty Wilcox, a wrestler he had downed twice before this season. Wilcox quickly jumped ahead and held a 5-1 lead at the beginning of the third period before earning the 5-3 victory.
On Saturday night, Arizona State fell behind early as the Sooners earned wins in the first four matches of the dual meet. Blackford, the No. 3 wrestler in the country, put the Sun Devils on the scoreboard with a pin of OU's Dustin Walker in just 1:18 in the 165-pound match, his fastest fall of the season. Blackford is now 25-2 on the year and 6-1 in dual-meet action.
Sophomore Erik Gladish captured the only other win of the night for the Sun Devils, with an 8-0 major decision over OU's Nick Curcio.
The Sun Devils return to action this weekend, Jan. 22-23, when they head to State College, Pa., to compete in the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Wrestling Duals.
