Tempe, Ariz. - The fifth-ranked Arizona State women's gymnastics extended its regular season home winning streak to 23 by capturing first place in a quadrangular meet Friday night in Wells Fargo Arena. ASU totaled 194.700 points, finishing ahead of Pac-10 foe Stanford (193.275), #19 Ohio State (192.500) and sixth-ranked Maryland 191.950 before a crowd of 894.
Arizona State (5-0) was in third place following its first rotation on the vault, but leapfrogged into first after a stellar showing on the uneven bars (49.100) where the Devils finished in four of the top five positions. Leading the way was All-American Kelly Christensen-Cowley, who captured first in the event with a 9.9. The junior also took top honors in vault action with a 9.750.
ASU's other All-American, senior Elizabeth McNabb, shined on the floor exercise with a winning score of 9.95, keeping alive a streak of posting 9.8's or better in the event dating back to the 1998 season. McNabb tied sophomore teammate Lea Carver for top honors in balance beam competition with a 9.925.
Other Sun Devil highlights included freshman Cassidy Vreeke's 9.85, third-place showing on floor and sophomore Rhonda Robinette's third place finish of 9.85 in bars competition. Junior Kim Skinner (9.825) and freshman Margaret Wojciak (9.8) were right behind Robinette in fourth and fifth, respectively.
Maryland sophomore and Scottsdale, Ariz., native Laura Moon was the all-around victor, posting a 9.875, third place performance on beam. The Terrapins stand at 1-3 on the young season. Stanford (2-1), competing for the first time in 2000, got a 9.9 from Laura Harding on the floor which placed the senior second behind McNabb. Ohio State's top individual finish came from sophomore Mary Beth Doerr, who gave the Buckeyes (2-4) a second place mark of 9.875 in bar competition.
Arizona State hits the road for two consecutive weeks, beginning with a showdown in Berkeley against Cal on Friday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m. PST.
