TEMPE, Ariz. - Sophomore David Douglas scored an 8-7 decision over No. 15 Jon Archuleta to give the No. 19 Arizona State wrestling team a 22-18 victory over No. 14 Cal State Bakersfield Sunday evening at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield, Calif. With the victory, Arizona State improved to 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in the Pac-10 Conference. The win also ended defending Pac-10 champion Cal State Bakersfield's 11-match winning streak and 13-match Pac-10 winning streak.
After the two teams wrestled to a near draw with Arizona State holding onto a 19-18 lead after nine matches, Douglas, currently ranked No. 18 in the country at 141 pounds, and Archuleta exchanged takedowns, near falls and reversals to end the first period tied 4-4. Archuleta held a 6-4 advantage heading into the third period and held that lead 1:45 into the third period. It was then that Archuleta shot in for a single leg on Douglas to avoid his second stall warning, while Douglas caught him in a cradle to receive two points for the takedown and two near fall points to earn the victory as time expired.
Other winners for the Sun Devils included freshman Nick Frost who upset No. 12 Nathan Vasquez at 157 pounds, sophomores Curtis Owen at 174, Erik Gladish at 197 and Daniel Hyman at 133. Junior Steve Blackford earned his 24th victory of the season with a 16-4 major decision over No. 20 Ian Nelms.
The Sun Devils return to action on Friday, Jan. 14 with a match at No. 4 Oklahoma State and on Saturday, Jan. 15 at No. 3 Oklahoma. Both dual meets are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Central Standard Time.
