TEMPE, Ariz. - The ninth-ranked Michigan men's swimming and diving team notched victories in seven of the 13 events staged en route to a 134-109 victory over #12 Arizona State Friday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
ASU (2-2) opened the dual meet by finishing first and second in the 400-yard medley relay, but Michigan (3-1) answered with a sweep of the top three spots in 1000 freestyle competition. Winning the 1000 was junior Chris Thompson, who set a new Mona Plummer Center record with his time of 8:57.56. Wolverine sophomore Tim Sicilliano had a solid meet, touching the wall first in both the 200 individual medley (1:50.36) and 500 free (4:24.24), establishing NCAA consideration times in the process.
The Sun Devils remained close throughout due to the strength of its divers and sprint freestyle racers. Junior Mark Briggs took home first place in the one-meter competition (284.85), while senior teammate Allan Sonkin won the three-meter event with his score of 309.75. Sophomore Simon MacDonald swam to victories in the 50 (20.45) and 100 (45.08) freestyle, as did the Arizona State 400 free relay team of Bo West, Anders Lyrbring, Pablo Abal and Otto Hinks, which clocked in at 3:02.58. Meanwhile junior Adam Guzauskas established a new season best and NCAA consideration mark with his 2:01.41, third-place showing in the 200 breaststroke.
The Sun Devil men return to action Saturday at 1:00 p.m. when they host #11 Tennessee. Earlier Saturday, at 9:00 a.m., ASU's women's team and select men's swimmers will entertain Virginia Tech and Wyoming in the Sun Devil Invitational.
