PROVO, Utah (AP) - Michael Vranes had six of his eight points during a 17-3 second half run as Brigham Young defeated Arizona State 78-67 Tuesday night.
BYU (4-1) of the Mountain West Conference trailed 53-48 with 11:14 to go in the game. Terrell Lyday and Vranes hit 3-point baskets to start BYU on its run and close to 55-54 with 9:59 to play.
Awvee Storey hit one free throw to give ASU (4-3) of the PAC-10 its final lead at 56-54 with 9:48 remaining.
Vranes ended BYU's run with another 3-point basket at the 6:45 mark.
Mekeli Wesley paced BYU with 26 points, 16 in the second half despite picking up his fourth foul with 16:37 left in the game. Lyday added 17 and Silester Rivers added 10.
Storey led Arizona State with 22 points and Shawn Redhage added 12.
BYU led 33-31 at the half.
Arizona State took the lead in the first three minutes of the second half when Chad Prewitt scored all six of his points during an 8-0 run. That spurt gave ASU a 39-36 lead with 17:21 remaining.
BYU finished with a 39-32 rebounding advantage. Wesley had nine while Vranes, a 6-foot-3 guard, had six. Storey led ASU with seven rebounds.
