PROVO, Utah - Despite a hard-fought battle, the Arizona State Sun Devil volleyball team lost its opening round match of the NCAA tournament, 3-0, to Wisconsin Friday at the Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah. Game scores were 17-15, 15-10, 15-3.
Game one was a game of momentum as each team went back and forth in a close game. Wisconsin would finally prevail, 17-15.
ASU went up 10-4 in game two before the Badgers rallied with six straight points to even the score at 10-all. The Sun Devils would not score again as Wisconsin notched five more points to end game two.
Wisconsin jumped on the Sun Devils early in game three, 10-1 and finished with the 15-3 win. With the win the Badgers advance to play the winner of the second match of the night between BYU and Princeton.
The Sun Devils, who finish the year with a 14-13 record, were led by junior outside hitter Amanda Burbridge who had a team-high nine kills and three service aces. Ashley Hubbard and Jami Coughlin both finished in double figures in digs with 11 and 10, respectively. Senior Laura Hibsman ended the night with eight kills and four blocks.
Leading the Badgers was Jenny Maastricht, who finished with a match-high 16 kills. She also had 13 digs to help the defensive effort. Sherisa Livingston had 14 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Jamie Gardner led all players with 15 digs.
