TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Eddie House scored 42 points to become the first Arizona State player to surpass the 40-point mark twice, and the Sun Devils beat Penn State 93-85 to win the AZCentral.Com/ASU Holiday Classic on Wednesday night.
House, who scored 31 points in the tournament opener en route to tournament most valuable player honors, scored a school-record 46 points on Dec. 18 against San Diego State.
House hit 14-of-18 field-goal attempts, including 6-of-6 3-pointers, to tie the tournament single-game record set by Eastern Michigan's Derrick Dial in 1997.
Since scoring five points on 0-for-16 shooting at Brigham Young on Dec. 7, House is averaging 35 points over Arizona State's last four games.
House, who was named to the all-tournament team for the third time in four years, scored 13 consecutive points over a 2:36 span in the first half to give the Sun Devils (8-3) a 41-28 lead.
Titus Ivory's 3-point sparked a 7-0 run to start the second half as Penn State (8-3) rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit to pull within 49-44 with 18:36 remaining.
House and Awvee Storey brought Arizona State back, scoring four points each during a 13-2 run that gave the Sun Devils a 62-46 lead with 14:41 to go.
The Nittany Lions went 5:09 with only one field goal, but made 4-of-6 free throws to cut Arizona State's lead to 72-67 with 6:05 remaining.
But House secured the victory in the closing minutes, converting a four-point play when he was fouled while connecting on his final 3-pointer to give the Sun Devils an 86-71 lead with 3:24 to play.
Jarrett Stephens had 27 points and 13 rebounds for Penn State while Joe Crispen added 26 points.
