TEMPE, Ariz. - In their first dual meet competition in over a month, the Arizona State men's and women's swimming teams defeated their respective opponents from the University of Washington Saturday at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The 12th ranked ASU men swam to a 184-78 victory, while the #18 Sun Devil women won by a 168.5-93.5 margin.
On the men's side, Arizona State (2-1) touched the wall first in 12 of the 14 events staged, including both relays. Among the ASU double winners were Anders Lyrbring in the 100 (45.08) and 200-yard freestyle (1:39.21). The latter time will earn the freshman NCAA Championship consideration. Junior Adam Guzauskas also won two events, touching the wall first in the 100 (56.14) and 200 (2:03.86) breaststroke. Meanwhile senior Pablo Abal recorded his fastest mark of the season in 100 backstroking action, clocking in at 48.97. Huskie senior Matt Nelson was impressive in the distance free events, winning the 500 and 100 in times of 4:32.71 and 9:20.44, respectively.
The Devils (3-1) took top honors in 10 women's races, including a sweep by junior Lauren Morelli in the backstroke events with times of 56.90 in the 100 and 2:05.18 in the 200. Top honors also went to sophomore Riley Mants in the 100 (1:04.68) and 200 (2:19.10) breast, as well as senior Casey Murphy with victories in 500 (5:02.83) and 100 (10:16.18) freestyle action. UW freshman in Harada was dominant in the shorter free events, winning the 100 in 51.84 and 200 in a time of 1:51.41
Saturday's meet marked Arizona State's final competition of the millennium. The Sun Devil men return to action Jan. 7, 2000 against national powerhouse Michigan, while the ASU women's team will participate in the Sun Devil invitational the following day.
