TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State women's basketball team beat the New Zealand National Team 84-70 in its second exhibition game Saturday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Sun Devils were led by forward Theresa Jantzen's 21 points. Guard Kitch Kitchen had 11 points, and Leah Combs and Kristine Sand each contributed 10 points. Jantzen also led the team with 10 rebounds, and Kitchen paced the team with six assists.
New Zealand center Gina Farmer led the team with 15 points. Forward Rebecca Cotton and Sally Farmer paced the team, which will represent the Oceania zone in the 2000 Olympics, with 11 points apiece. Gina Farmer also led the team in rebounds with five. Guard Kristin Egan led New Zealand in assists with four.
Arizona State built a commanding lead on 50 percent shooting in the first half and held a 47-28 advantage at halftime. In the second half, the Sun Devils extended their lead to 30 points en route to the victory.
Both teams had at least 30 fouls as the Sun Devils had 30 and New Zealand had 36. In the second half, six players fouled out, four on the New Zealand team and two on ASU's team.
ASU opens the regular season against UC Irvine Friday, November 19 at 7 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Arena.
