GILBERT, Ariz. - Western State College captured the men's title (28 points) and was edged by Adams State College in the women's race at the 1999 Arizona State Cross Country Invitational, held at Freestone Park. Adams and Western actually tied with 53 points on top of the women's team standings with 53 points, but Adams State won the tiebreaker. Running only its reserves as the starters rested for next week's meet, Arizona State's men finished fifth and the women fourth.
Individually, Western State's Michael Aish and Joseph LeRoux finished 1-2 in 24:47 and 25:07, respectively, on the men's side. The women's individual title was captured by Johanna Nielsen of Utah in 18:18. ASU was led by Jeremy Rasmussen's 16 place finish in 26:10 and Nicole Simmons 19th-place finish.
ASU, ranked fourth in the latest women's poll and 17th in the men's rankings, participates in the Pre-National meet next Saturday, Oct. 16, in Bloomington, Ind., site of this year's NCAA Championships.
