Sun Devil Women's Cross Country Squad Places Second, Men Fourth At Pac-10's

LONG BEACH, CALIF. - Arizona State had its best showing ever at the Pac-10 Championships as the Sun Devil women finished second, their best showing in school history, and the men matched last year's school record fourth-place finish. Individually, Lisa Aguilera and Fasil Bizuneh earned all-conference honors as each finished fourth. Aguilera finished the 5K women's course in 17:20 for the best individual finish in ASU history while Bizuneh completed the men's 8K course in 24:00 for the second-best finish in school history.

The Sun Devil women, ranked 11th in the nation, had three top-10 finishers as Colleen Burke placed ninth and Kelly MacDonald 10th. Brianna Torres placed 16th and Mary Duerbeck 23rd to bring ASU's point total to a Pac-10 Championship school-record 62, crushing the previous best of 121 (1986). In addition, Amy Maciasek placed 29th and Cody Sohn 33rd.

The ASU men, ranked ninth, garnered three top-20 finishes as Bizuneh was followed by Garrett Jensen at 17th, Juan Chavira at 18th, Isaiah Festa at 22nd and Jeremy Rasmussen at 23rd. Their point total of 84 also wiped out the previous school record at the Pac-10s of 108 (1986). Brandon Strong placed 44th and David Burke 49th.

Arizona totaled 36 points to win its seventh Pac-10 men's title. Stanford was next with 63, followed by Oregon (76), Arizona State (84), California (119), Washington (133), UCLA (193) and Washington State (199).

Oregon's Steve Fein (23:37.00) claimed the men's individual title.

On the women's side, freshman Erin Sullivan led a Stanford sweep of the top three spots as the No. 1 Cardinal cruised to its fourth consecutive Pac-10 title (and sixth in the last seven years).

Stanford totaled 32 points to win its fourth straight Pac-10 title, followed by Arizona State (62), Washington (70), UCLA (98), Arizona (119), Oregon (135), Washington State (205), USC (228) and California (228).

The Pac-10 Cross Country Championships next travel to the University of Washington in 2000.
