Sophomore opposite hitter Jami Coughlin notched a match-high 17 kills as Arizona State defeated Washington State, 3-1, at the Wells Fargo Arena this evening. Game scores were 14-16, 15-12, 15-7, 16-14.
After trailing 0-8 in the fourth game, Washington State came back to take the lead and had four game points but could not close the door. ASU took the lead back and had five match points before forcing a Cougar error by Kristen Johnson to win the match.
Freshman middle blocker Julia Leddy tallied a career-high nine block assists and sophomore outside hitter Robyn Mattingly added six block assists as well as 12 kills. Junior outside hitter Amanda Burbridge notched 15 kills while defensive specialist Ashley Hubbard led the team with 13 digs.
Washington State had four players in double figures for kills including Joy Sperry, Holly Harris and LaToya Harris who tallied 13 each. Holly Harris led the Cougars defensively with a match-high 14 digs and added five blocks as well. Trina Kightlinger led the squad with three service aces.
The Sun Devils had 11 service aces on the night while Washington State committed 10 service errors. The Cougars had 63 digs to ASU's 57. However, the Devils outblocked WSU, 15-9.
The Sun Devils are next in action on Thursday, October 14 against Stanford at 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion as they travel to the Bay Area in continued conference action.
