MINNEAPOLIS - The largest crowd in Minnesota history packed the new Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium to watch the Golden Gopher soccer team post a 1-0 victory over Arizona State.
"What a great college soccer atmosphere," Minnesota head coach Sue Montagne said of the record crowd of 1,432. "It was really exciting. The fans were part of the action. This place (the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium), is something special."
Minnesota (2-0) took charge early in the match, notching five corner kicks in the first ten minutes of the match. The Gophers were unable to convert on their opportunities until the 28:45 mark when junior forward Laurie Seidl blasted a shot into the back of the net to tally the first goal in the Gophers' new home. Liz Wagner and Nicole Lee were credited with assists on Seidl's goal, her second of the young season.
The Gophers built a commanding 25-10 advantage in shots, finishing with an 11-3 edge in corner kicks. Arizona State goalkeeper Erin Reinke was credited with 14 saves, while Minneosta's Dana Larson shut out the Sun Devils with three saves.
