HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - Arizona State's 16th-ranked women's cross country team opened the 1999 campaign with an impressive victory at the UC Irvine/Asics Cross Country Invitational. The Sun Devils toppled defending champion Arizona and 15th-ranked Northern Arizona, who finished second and third, respectively, in the 16-team meet. ASU's men took second place as Arizona won the men's 13-team meet.
The Sun Devil women dominated the upper half of the 5,000-meter race as Sun Devil runners took second through fifth place and six of the top 12 individual places. Sophomore Lisa Aguilera led ASU, finishing second in 17:34.8 to Arizona's Tara Chaplin (17:32.1). Also scoring for the Sun Devils were juniors Kelly MacDonald (3rd, 17:47.8), Colleen Burke (4th, 18:03.2), Mary Duerbeck (5th, 18:07.5) and Amy Maciasek (9th, 18:20.1).
ASU's men were led by the sophomore duo of Fasil Bizuneh and Isaiah Festa who finished in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Bizuneh came in at 24:47.6 and Festa at 24:49.3 in the 8,000-meter race. Senior Garrett Jensen, a transfer from Dartmouth, finished 12th in his Sun Devil debut (25:02.8) while sophomores Kris Alexander (14th, 25:08.1) and Juan Chavira (25th, 25:34.8) also scored for the Sun Devils.
