ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Despite a 30-shot brigade (14 on goal), the Arizona State women's soccer team defeated the University of Michigan, 3-1, Friday at the Michigan Soccer Field.
In their home opener, the Wolverines (2-2) netted the game's first goal at 14:05. Midfielder Laurie Peterson served a great through-ball to spring Abby Crumpton on a break-away. Crumpton rocketed a shot into the upper left corner for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 Wolverine lead.
Michigan continued to apply pressure throughout the remainder of the half but could not add to the lead. Arizona State (2-2) broke through with an offensive flurry to end the first half and open the second half, scoring three times within a 10:01 span. Stacey Tullock tied the game with a goal at 39:09. Tullock received a pass from Jennifer Peterson and fired a cross-field shot into the lower left corner of the net. Karine Inoue gave the Sun Devils a 2-1 lead at 41:21. Tullock made a slide tackle pass to Inoue, whom then blasted a shot into the lower right corner. Then, to open the second half, Tullock fed a through-ball to Peterson on a break-away. Peterson chipped the ball into the net to close the scoring at 49:10. The Wolverines did not go quietly as three times they drilled shots off the crossbar, the best chance coming with 2:15 left. Amy Sullivant blasted a shot from the right corner of the box, which was blocked out by ASU's Erin Reinke, and then followed with a rebound that caught the crossbar. Reinke was credited with 13 saves, increasing her season total to 37 saves, which leads the Pac-10 Conference.
