TEMPE, Ariz.-- The ASU men's tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Region VIII NCAA Championships with a 4-3 win over in-state rival Arizona Friday at the UCLA Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The 34th-ranked Sun Devils will take on host UCLA (No. 10) on Saturday, with the winner advancing to the regional finals on Sunday.
The doubles teams of Gustavo Marcaccio-Alex Osterrieth and Ed Carter-Tim Hammond recorded victories giving ASU the doubles point. However, Arizona jumped ahead by winning the first three singles matches at the number 3, 4 and 6 positions.
The Sun Devils then won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches to knot the score at 3-3. Marcaccio went to the fifth tie breaker in his first set, but then blanked the Wildcats' Roland Kupka 6-0 to pick up the win at No. 1 singles. Osterrieth defeated Jerome Oliveri 6-2, 6-2.
In the decisive match, ASU's Tim Hammond dropped his first set to Jean-Noel Lacoste in the second tie-breaker, but mounted a thrilling 6-3, 6-2 comeback to claim the win.
