SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Arizona State's 13th-ranked men's swimming and diving team defeated the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) 130-76 at Santa Barbara Saturday to move to 2-1 on the season.
Although complete individual results were not provided by the host university, a short-handed list showed senior All-American Scott VonSchoff (Napa, Calif.) won the 50 yard freestyle in 20.97, ahead of second and third place efforts by freshman Nick Brunelli (Mansfield, Mass.) in 21.61 and Wiley Wallace (Scottsdale, Ariz.) in 21.64. With the win, VonSchoff has now won at least one individual event in each of ASU's three meets.
The only Sun Devil entered in the 1000 yard free, junior Mike Dowling (Wellesly, Mass.) emerged victorious by less than two-tenths of a second. Dowling's winning time of 9:26.67, which edged UCSB's Eric Koch at 9:26.81, knocked off more than ten seconds from his previous best this season and was close to his all-time personal best of 9:24.65.
Just into his collegiate career, freshman Rich Jacobs (Seattle, Wash.) provided another strong performance, winning the 200 yard individual medley in 1:53.55. A duo of All-Americans, sophomore Anders Lyrbring (Kungalv, Sweden) and senior Bo West (Esbjerg, Denmark) finished one-two in the 200 yard free. In his first race of the season at this distance, Lyrbring's 1:40.42 was just over a second faster than West at 1:41.47.
ASU's men and women of the water will take a three-week break from competition in anticipation of the Texas Invitational December 1-3.
In a note about Friday's dual between the men of ASU and No. 6 USC in Los Angeles, Calif., the final score of the competition came to 140-103 in favor of USC after the diving portion of the meet was conducted Saturday.
Senior All-American Marc Briggs (Madera, Calif.) won the 1-meter springboard with a total score of 296.25. Freshman Gordon Blukis (Cuppertino, Calif.) finished third in that event at 245,65, but led the way for ASU with a second-place finish in the 3-meter (278.70).
The Sun Devils had trailed the Trojans 125-80 after the swimming portion of the meet, Friday.
