Pac-10 Champs Travel to Jerry Pate Intercollegiate

ASU TRAVELS OLD OVERTON CLUB:
The Arizona State men's golf team, ranked seventh by MasterCard Rankings, travels to Birmingham, Ala., for the 1998 Jerry Pate Intercollegiate at Old Overton Club (par-71, 6,936 yards). The 1998 field includes 12 teams, with 36 holes on Oct. 19 and 18 holes on Oct. 20.

RECENTLY:

-ASU was third at the Ping Preview at Hazeltine Golf Club in Minnesota on
Sept. 28-29
-Jeff Quinney finished fourth with 2-over-par 218 (69-72-77)
-ASU finished second at the TOPY Cup in Tokyo, Japan, on Sept. 16-18 with a
two-round score of 593
-Greg Padilla took home medalist honors with a 143 (75-68)
-Quinney tied for sixth.

QUICK ASU TEAM NOTES:

-ASU has won a Pac-10 record four straight league titles national champions
in 1990 and 1996
-has a current string of 11 straight NCAA top-10 finishes, the best current
mark in the nation
-the only team to finish in the top five at the NCAA's in each of the past
four years
-coached by sixth-year head coach Randy Lein, the 1996 National Coach of
the Year and a five-time winner of Pac-10 Coach of the Year honors.

NCAA NOTE:
The Sun Devil's have averaged a 4.1 finish at the NCAA Championships in the past 10 years, the best mark in the nation. Only Oklahoma State (4.7) has averaged higher than a ninth-place finish in the past decade. ASU finished fifth last year.

NCAA NOTE II:
Eight schools have made at least nine straight trips to the NCAA Championships. The schools and the consecutive years they have contended are: Oklahoma State (52), Clemson (17), Florida (16), Arizona State (15), Arizona (10), UNLV (10), North Carolina (10) and New Mexico (9).

THE LINEUP: Quick notes on a probable ASU lineup:

(1)--Greg Padilla--senior who won the TOPY Cup with a two-round score of
143 (75-68) in Tokyo on Sept. 16-18 won the Southern California Amateur
Championship this summer, played in 12 tournaments last year.

(2)--Paul Casey--sophomore from England who posted a 72.30 stroke
average last year, medalist at 1998 West Regional, 1998 Pac-10 Championship and
1998 USC Invitational1998 second-team All-American.

(3)--Jeff Quinney--won the Oregon Amateur and Pacific Northwest Amateur
this summer, second-team All-Pac-10 and honorable mention All-American last
year, 72.57 stroke average in 1997-98.

(4)--Jin Park--sophomore who posted a 73.85 stroke average last year,
finished in fourth at 1998 Pac-10 Championships.

(5)--Jason Hause--6-1 junior who has played in three tournaments in his
career, native of Littleton, Colo.

ASU Quick Facts
-ASU has posted 11 straight NCAA top-10 finishes, the nation's best current
mark.
-ASU is the only school to finish in the top five at the NCAA Tournament in
each of the past four seasons.
-ASU's NCAA Championships: 1990 and 1996
