"It is a tremendous pleasure to be here today. Dr. (Kevin) White mentioned my wife Carolyn. She is my top assistant coach, she does a lot of recruiting. She does a lot of the counseling, of me, not of the players, making sure i stay focused on what should be done. I'm extremely proud of her, appreciative of her and my two kids, for supporting me over the years."
"I just wanted to also mention Ned Wulk and his record here. A number of those wins came against me as a player when i played for New Mexico State back in the late 60s. So I'm very familiar with him."
"As I watched the program this last year, one of the teams I was pulling for was Arizona State because of all the adversity they were going through. As I told the players a few minutes ago, it was special for me to see them above the adversity they were going through. It tells me that they have a tremendous amount of heart, they want to win, and when you have that, you can build on it and you will win."

Why leave Ole Miss and come to ASU
"Because of the challenges, number one, and because of the vision from the top. It was one of the very few places that I would have left Ole Miss for. This is a place that was right for my wife and my children and it was a position that might not open up for another 15 years. I wrestled with the decision to leave Ole Miss and come to ASU. I turned down a number of situations just this year, but when the Arizona State situation was offered, it was a situation that I could not turn down with all the opportunities here. You have a great city, great facilities, and a great administration. With all those things in place, all we have to do is add a few more pieces and it is a golden opportunity for success."
