TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State women’s lacrosse team and head coach Courtney Martinez Connor announced, Thursday, the inaugural class for the new NCAA Sun Devil lacrosse program.
“We couldn't be more proud of this inaugural 2016 class,” Martinez Connor said. “They have committed to pave the way for Arizona State lacrosse. These young women will be arriving on campus to train for an entire year before our first season of competition so they can help build a foundation for all future Sun Devils.”
The 2016 incoming class will redshirt for the 2016-17 school year and start their eligibility for the 2017-18 competitive season.
The Sun Devils will welcome Carley Adams (LaxManiax, Florida), Berkley Bonneau (C2C Dallas, Texas), Avery Hamill (Minnesota Elite, Ontario), Mia Harp (C2C Dallas, Texas), Logan Millican (LaxManiax, Florida), Campbell Poe (Team OC, California), Madison Woodall (LaxManiax, Florida), Krista Coppinger (Midwestern Force, Kansas), Ashley Cusack (Superstix, Washington), Lauren Derminio (East Valley GL, Arizona), and Victoria Krammer (Minnesota Elite, Minnesota).
Adams, an attacker for the Sun Devils, comes to ASU from Orlando, Florida where she was named to the All-Broward County second team and to the Florida Youth Lacrosse Foundation High School first-team all-region south team last season.
“Carley is a shifty attacker with great field vision,” Martinez Connor said. “She works extremely hard on the ride and never gives up.”
Hailing from Dallas, Texas where she plays for C2C Dallas, Bonneau will play goalie for the Sun Devils. The Texas Native was named to the first-ever Inside Lacrosse Invitational in 2015 where she recorded a 61 percent save percentage and turned away 11 shots.
“Berkeley is a super dynamic goalkeeper,” Martinez Connor said. “She is very athletic and a great communicator on the field.”
Hamill joins Arizona State from Paris, Ontario where she was a three-time member of the Ontario U-19 team from 2013-15 and won the silver medal in the 2013 Canadian Championship.
“Avery is very fluid midfielder,” said Martinez Connor. “Hailing from Canada, she obviously has excellent stickwork, but that, coupled with her height and speed, makes her a deadly threat all over the field.”
Harp, accompanying high school and club lacrosse teammate Berkeley Bonneau to ASU, will play midfield for the Sun Devils. The Texas native was named a 2015 US Lacrosse first-team All-American and the 2015 MVP of Coppell HS. Harp was also named All-State in lacrosse two-straight years from 2014-15.
“Mia is incredibly fast and such a team player,” Martinez Connor said. “I don't think there's anyone on the field who gets more excited and into the game then she does. She wears her emotions on her sleeve and can really get the team going.”
Millican, a defender from LaxManiax in Florida, was named to the Florida Youth Lacrosse Foundation High School second team All-South Region in 2015 and to the 2014 South Florida National team.
“Logan is one of the hardest working players on the field at any one time,” Martinez Connor said. “While she excels on defense, she is also a very versatile player on the field.”
A native of Los Alamitos, Calif., Poe joins Arizona State as a goalie. A three-year starter, Poe recorded 86 saves and a 55.8 save percentage in 2015. She was also named to the 2015 US Lacrosse National Tournament Team.
“Campbell may be small in stature but there is nothing small about her game between the pipes,” Martinez Connor said. “She is an absolute brick wall. You need to be calm, cool and collected when in the cage and Campbell embodies all of that with ease.”
Woodall, a midfielder from Orlando, Fla., scored 49 goals and had 40 controlled draws in her first season with the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders in 2015. She was also named to the All-Broward County first-team that same season.
“Maddy's athleticism and communication on the field are the first two things that you notice about her,” Martinez Connor said. “But she has so many more facets to her game including her excellent presence on the defensive end of the field.”
Rounding out the inaugural signing class are Coppinger, Cusack, Derminio, and Kramer.
“Kristina is a solid defender and a total worker on the field, Ashley will be huge in the transition game, Lauren has tremendous speed and comes from a long line of Sun Devils, and Victoria is very driven and results oriented,” Martinez Connor said. “This group is willing to put in a lot of hard work on the field, in the classroom and within the community, which will ultimately translate into being tremendous leaders for the future.”
As the future lacrosse student-athletes look to make the move to ASU, Martinez Connor cannot be more excited and proud of the first-ever Sun Devil Lacrosse signing class.
“These student-athletes have engrained themselves in their own communities and we are excited to help them make a mark on Arizona State's campus. It is not easy to envision a program, facilities or a philosophy but these young women & their families believed in us – as a staff, athletics department, and as a University. We are certainly excited for where the future is going to take us and with the support of ASU. The sky is the limit for Sun Devil Lacrosse.”
Sun Devil Lacrosse will begin NCAA competition in the spring of 2018.
