WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Macey Gardner of Arizona State's volleyball team has been selected to play on the Pac-12 Conference's All-Star Volleyball Team that will tour China June 15-27.
The all-star team, made up of 12 Pac-12 student-athletes, will be coached by USC women's volleyball skipper Mick Haley. The team will play at least six matches against Chinese Professional Club Team over two weeks in Beijing and Shanghai.
"The Pac-12 is at the forefront of providing opportunities to further the student-athlete experience. Sun Devil Athletics shares the same goal and as such, is willing to partner with the Pac-12 to offer this opportunity to Macey," head coach Jason Watson commented.
Represented on the tour are student-athletes from Pac-12 teams that distinguished the Conference during the 2012 season with seven NCAA Tournament bids, tied for the most of any conference in the country. The team was selected by the coaching staff and Pac-12 liaison and includes two setters, one libero, three middle blockers and six outside hitters.
Macey Gardner is one of two freshmen to be chosen on the 12-person squad. A Pac-12 All-Freshman and All Pac-12 honoree, Gardner rewrote the ASU freshman kill record (577) and finished the year as one of only three freshmen ever to lead the Pac-12 Conference in total kills.
"Macey has proven, in a short time, to be an athlete of considerable talent. She will represent both the Pac-12 and Arizona State University with class, humility and appreciation for the efforts of all associated with this trip."
