Johnson has both played and coached in the NCAA Tournament.
Larry Greer joined Herb Sendek's staff in August of 2012, as he had spent the previous five seasons working with Nate McMillan at the Portland Trail Blazers as an assistant coach in 2011-12 and an advance scout from 2007-2011. He also served as the advance scout for the Houston Rockets from 2005-07 under Jeff Van Gundy.
Greer started his coaching career in the college ranks as an assistant at Brandeis for the 1992 ECAC champions and worked at Boston College from 1992-94 where he was part of the support staff for the team that reached the Elite Eight in 1994. He was an assistant at Boston University from 1994-2003 as the Terriers posted a record for single-season wins (25) and made the NCAA Tournament in 1996 and 2002 as well as the NIT in 2003. He also worked at Wright State from 2003-05 before taking the job with the Rockets.
Greer graduated from Northeastern with a B.S. in June of 1989 and was team captain in 1988-89.
"I have known Larry Greer for over 20 years as a college basketball coach. I have had the good fortune to have him on our staff at Wright State University. When it comes to scouting the opposition there are few better," says Paul Biancardi, ESPN Basketball Director of Recruiting. "He covers all the details of the opponents and knows how to make a game plan that makes a difference. In practice and as a bench coach he knows the pulse of his own team and is ready to make in-game adjustments if needed. His knowledge about the game from college and NBA are in depth. His organization skills in the basketball office are strong and the players always know he is honest and can trust him as he will work diligently to make them improve. His loyalty, work ethic and experience will elevate the Arizona State basketball program immediately."
"The best recommendation I can give to anyone is would I would hire them in a second if I was given the chance? If I got a job tomorrow Larry would be a call I would make," says former NBA head coach and esteemed TV analyst Jeff Van Gundy. "He is an ideal fit and a wonderful addition to Herb's staff. He is professional and versatile and combines loyalty and hard work as good as one can expect. He embodies what you want in a staff member."
