Katie Burkhart Named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week

April 11, 2006

Tempe, Ariz. - Arizona State sophomore pitcher Katie Burkhart has been named the Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for Apr. 4-10, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

The San Luis Obispo, Calif., native jumped into the NCAA record books on Saturday, pitching a complete, 11-inning loss against Washington, striking out 23 batters. That mark ties her for fifth all-time in the NCAA, and sets a new ASU school record.

In the rubber game against Washington, Burkhart came on in relief for Desiree Serrano, pitching six shutout innings and five strikeouts to log her 17th win of the season.

Over the weekend, Burkhart pitched 20.2 innings, allowing only 11 hits while striking out 32. She held opposing batters to a .151 clip.

A 2004-05 honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection, Burkhart led the Sun Devils with a 1.52 ERA in 184.1 innings. She struck out 220 batters, good for sixth all-time in ASU history.

Arizona State (2-2, 38-5), hosts two games against Arizona during Conference rivalry weekend.

This is Burkhart's second Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week award and Arizona State's 44th weekly honor all-time.
