Katelyn Boyd Named Top 10 Softball Player of the Year Finalist

OKLAHOMA CITY - Katelyn Boyd of the Arizona State softball team has been named a Top 10 Finalist for the 2012 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year as announced by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America on Wednesday.

Due to a tie, 11 individuals are being honored this year. This award, which is considered the most prestigious honor in Division I women's collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players. This is the second time Boyd has made the Top 10 finalist pool, the last being her junior campaign in 2011 when she was a Top 3 contestant.

The three finalists selected from this list will be announced May 23, while the winner of the 2012 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be revealed on May 29 prior to the start of the NCAA WCWS in Oklahoma City. 

The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award is voted on by coaching representatives from 11 Division I Conferences in the 15 ASA Regions as well as members of the media who consistently cover Division I Softball across the country, and previous Player of the Year recipients.

POSTSEASON INFORMATION
Since the Pac-12 champion is determined by winning percentage, whichever team captures two of the three games will earn the Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Cal owns a 19-2 (.905) record while ASU is 17-2 (.895) after two games were rained out earlier in the conference season. The NCAA Division I Softball Selection Announcement will be broadcast on ESPNU on Sunday, May 13 at 7 p.m. PT/10 p.m. ET.
