EUGENE, Ore. - The 2006 Pac-10 Track & Field Championships presented by 76 ProClean Gasolines got underway at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., Saturday with members of the Arizona State University track and field faring well in the heptathlon and decathlon on the first of two days of competition in the events. Jacquelyn Johnson leads the women's heptathlon by 200 points while Joshua Kinnaman is the leader in the men's decathlon with a 77 point advantage over the field.
Johnson, the 2004 Pac-10 champion, scored personal best marks in two events and recorded her best heptathlon marks in all four events to build a 3,615 point total, good enough for a 200-point lead over 2005 champion Julie Pickler of Washington State. Johnson won all four events, opening with a 13.49 in the 100m hurdles before clearing 1.78m in the high jump. She then set a personal best in the shot put with a winning toss of 12.40m before again bettering her top 200m time with a winning run of 24.62. In the school record book, her hurdles time is the best ever in the heptathlon, beating out Gea Johnson's 1990 mark of 13.51.
On the men's side, Kinnaman has accumulated 3,957 points, just two of his season best first day total, while teammate Ryan Ehler sits ninth overall with 3,377 points. Kinnaman won the first and last events of the day and held the lead over the course of the five events while Ehler, who opened in fourth place, hit some tough times before rebounding to close out the day in ninth.
Kinnaman opened with a winning time of 11.07 in the 100m dash before placing second in the long jump with a mark of 7.11m. He then placed third in the shot put with a toss of 13.19m before placing fifth with a clearance of 1.95m in the high jump. In the final event of the day, Kinnaman ran a personal best 49.56 in the 400m dash to secure his lead.
Ehler opened the competition with a time of 11.35 in the 100m dash before slipping to ninth place overall after his mark of 6.18m was 12th in the competition. Ehler rebounded with the second-best throw in the shot put at 13.28m before tying for eighth in the high jump at 1.83m. Ehler followed Kinnaman's lead by also running a personal best time in the 400m dash, finishing in 54.23, but placed 13th overall to slip back to ninth overall.
The final three women's events and five men's events will be contested Sunday in Eugene. Next weekend, the Sun Devils return to Eugene for the remainder of the Pac-10 Championships.
