Ironman Triathlon Road Restrictions (Nov. 16-20)

Several Tempe streets will be closed or restricted Nov. 16 to 20 for the Ironman Triathlon on Nov. 19. The following street restrictions and closures have been identified. However others could be put in place to address public safety concerns that arise during the event. The information provided by the City of Tempe is for public information purposes only.  All restrictions/closures are based on preliminary assessments and can be increased or decreased in scope without notice. These include:

  • Rio Salado Parkway will be closed in both directions between Mill Avenue and Ash Avenue from 6 a.m. Nov. 16 until 12 p.m. Nov. 20.
  • Rio Salado Parkway/Ash Avenue will be closed in both directions between Hardy Drive and the US Airways garage just north of 3rd Street from approximately 7 a.m. until 12 p.m. Nov. 19.
  • 1st Street eastbound will be closed between Farmer Avenue and Rio Salado Parkway Nov. 19.

The following streets will be restricted or closed Nov. 19 from 6 a.m. until approximately 6 p.m.:

  • Rio Salado Parkway/Ash Avenue westbound will be closed between the US Airways garage just north of 3rd Street and Hardy Drive.
  • Rio Salado Parkway westbound will be restricted to one lane between Hardy Drive and Priest Drive.
  • Rio Salado Parkway eastbound will be restricted to one lane between Mill Avenue and McClintock Drive.  All traffic at intersecting streets and driveways will be required to turn right.  No lefts or through movements will be permitted along this stretch of Rio Salado Parkway.
  • Rio Salado Parkway westbound will be closed between McClintock Drive and Mill Avenue.  All westbound traffic (east of McClintock Drive) must turn left onto southbound McClintock Drive.  Limited access will be granted to local residents between Rural Road and Mill Avenue (from southbound Rural Road only).
  • Priest Drive northbound will be restricted to one lane between Rio Salado Parkway and the SR202L eastbound on-ramp.
  • Mill Avenue southbound will be closed between Washington Street/Curry Road and 2nd Street.
  • Mill Avenue northbound will be closed at 2nd Street (access to businesses maintained).
  • Scottsdale Road southbound will be closed at the SR202L.  Local access will be provided to area businesses and residents south of the SR202L.
  • Rural Road northbound will be closed at Rio Salado Parkway.  All northbound traffic must turn right onto eastbound Rio Salado Parkway.
  • McClintock Drive will be closed in both directions between Rio Salado Parkway and the SR202L on/off-ramps.  North of the SR202L on/off-ramps, traffic will be restricted to one lane northbound.  All southbound traffic that does not turn right onto eastbound Curry Road will be forced onto westbound SR202L.
  • All traffic exiting the SR202L at Scottsdale Road will be required to turn northbound onto Scottsdale Road.  Local access will be provided to area businesses and residents south of the SR202L.
  • All traffic exiting eastbound on the SR202L at McClintock Drive will be required to turn northbound onto McClintock Drive.

The following bus detours will be in effect Nov. 19 from the start of service until 6 p.m.:

PLEASE NOTE THAT DURING THE EVENT CLOSURES, ORBIT EARTH WILL NOT SERVE TEMPE TRANSPORTATION CENTER.  ADDITIONALLY, ROUTE 48 AND ORBIT EARTH WILL NOT SERVE TEMPE MARKETPLACE.

  • Route 48 Northbound – Regular route east on Rio Salado Pkwy. to Priest Dr.; south on Priest Dr. to University Dr.; east on University Dr. to Ash Ave.; north on Ash Ave. to 5th St.; east on 5th St. to Tempe Transportation Center, route will terminate at Tempe Transportation Center.
  • Route 48 Southbound – Route begins at Tempe Transportation Center, Regular route west on 5th St. to Ash Ave.; south on Ash Ave. to University Dr.; west on University Dr. to Priest Dr.; north on Priest Dr. to Rio Salado Pkwy.; west on Rio Salado Pkwy. to resume regular route.
  • Route 62 Northbound – Regular route north on Hardy Dr. to University Dr.; east on University Dr. to Ash Ave.; north on Ash Ave. to 5th St.; east on 5th St. to resume regular route. 
  • Route 62 Southbound – From Tempe Marketplace east from bus stop to Smith Rd.; south on Smith Rd. to Rio Salado Pkwy.; west on Rio Salado Pkwy. to McClintock Dr.; south on McClintock Dr. to University Dr.; west on University Dr. to College Ave.; north on College Ave. to Tempe Transportation Center; west on 5th St. to Ash Ave.; south on Ash Ave. to University Dr.; west on University Dr. to Hardy Dr.; south on Hardy Dr. to resume regular route.
  • Route 72 Northbound – Regular route to Tempe Transportation Center; east on 5th St., south on College Ave. to University Dr.; west on University Dr. to Priest Dr.; north on Priest Dr./Galvin Pkwy. to McDowell Rd.; east on McDowell Rd. to Scottsdale Rd.; north on Scottsdale Rd. to resume regular route.
  • Route 72 Southbound – Regular route south on Scottsdale Rd. to McDowell Rd.; west on McDowell Rd. to 64th St.; south on 64th St./Galvin Pkwy./Priest Dr. to University Dr.; east on University Dr. to College Ave.; north on College Ave. to Tempe Transportation Center to resume regular route.
  • Route 81 Northbound – Regular route to Tempe Marketplace; east from bus stop to Smith Rd.; south on Smith Rd. to Rio Salado Pkwy.; east on Rio Salado Pkwy. to Price Rd.; north on Price Rd.; enter Loop 101 North exiting at McDowell Rd.; west on McDowell Rd. to Hayden Rd.; north on Hayden Rd. to resume regular route.
  • Route 81 Southbound – Regular route south on Hayden Rd. to McDowell Rd.; east on McDowell Rd to Loop 101; enter Loop 101 South exiting at Rio Salado Pkwy.; west on Rio Salado Pkwy. to Perry Ln.; north on Perry Ln. to Tempe Marketplace; east from bus stop to Smith Rd.; south on Smith Rd. to Rio Salado Pkwy.; west on Rio Salado Pkwy. to McClintock Dr.; south on McClintock Dr. to resume regular route
  • Orbit Earth Eastbound – Route begins at Curry Rd./College Ave.; regular route to Miller Rd./Curry Rd.; east on Curry Rd. to Stadem Dr.; north on Stadem Dr. (becomes Weber Dr.); south on McClintock Dr. to Curry Rd.; west on Curry Rd. to Miller Rd.; north on Miller Rd. to layover on northbound Miller Rd., far side of Curry Rd.
  • Orbit Earth Westbound – Route begins at Curry Rd./Miller Rd.; regular route to Scottsdale Rd./Weber Dr.; continue south on Scottsdale Rd. to Curry Rd.; west on Curry Rd. to College Ave.; north on College Ave. to layover on northbound College Ave., far side of Curry Rd.
