In Memory Pat Tillman

In Memory Pat Tillman

May 3, 2004

Pat Mason (Eugene, OR)
I was saddened by the news of Pat's untimely death. The impact of his decision truely shows his deeply rooted values of commitment, dedication and honor. I am proud to be associated with a man who lived life by his own rules. He will be remembered as a son, brother, husband, football player, soldier, quiet hero and a Sun Devil. My family sends our blessings to the Tillman's.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Tillman family. Pat was an incredible joy to watch as he raced around the south end-zone of Sun Devil Staduim with his long hair flowing from under his helmet. He would be the first to signal the fans to cheer on big plays and his enthusiasm was unequaled. He was such a fun player to watch. I was thrilled for him when he became a Cardinal and again when he left to become an Army Ranger. Now I am deeply saddened by his death. I will be shedding tears when I watch his number be retired by ASU. Thank you, Pat, for your unselfish service to our country.

Pat, Thanks for reawakening our Nation. You will always remain a truly GREAT person. There are few men and women that our children can look up to these days. Thank you for your heroism and sacrifice.

Pat, you have made us all darn proud to be Sun Devils and Americans.

I want to offer my deepest sympathy to the family of Pat Tillman. His loss is one that is felt by all of America. I have special memory of him. As a Sun Devil football season ticket holder for a long time, I watched him play the game with a zealousness that won't be duplicated. But one day in August during training camp at Camp Tontozona my two young daughters and I were playing in a deep swimming hole on Tonto Creek downstream from where our cabin is located. Suddenly a group of guys from Camp Tontozona came down after a practice to cool off in the creek. Among them was Jake Plummer and Pat Tillman. Most of the guys climbed up onto a rock perhaps 10 feet above the water and jumped into the creek from there. But not Pat - he went up to the highest rock - maybe 25 feet above the water - and jumped from there. I recall Plummer calling to him to quit that saying, "Come on, Pat. Don't you think we need you on this team?" That was the way he lived his life; ! not halfway, but to the max. We have truly lost a special individual - a real hero. May we all live up to his example.

We are so proud that Pat was at our university and played pro ball in our state. His values were so admirable. We at Apache Elementary School in Mrs. Turner and Mr. Krivonak's class will be writing a paragraph on patriotism and what it means to me. This was brought on by the wonderful life of Pat Tillman and all that he stood for. Thanks for raising such a wonderful man and sharing him with us.

The Knights of Columbus Council 12320 will hold Pat Tillman and his family in our prayers tonight at our Council Mtg. The courage and dedication he provided as he gave the ultimate sacrifice for his country should be an inspiration to all Americans. Pat Tillman's sacrifice has made a true impact on my life and I will never forget him for that.
