TEMPE, Ariz.—Eleven current and former members of the Arizona State track and field teams will be in action at the 2015 USA Track and Field Championships, Thursday through Sunday, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
The lone competitor with remaining Sun Devil eligibility, redshirt freshman Magdalyn Ewen will return to Hayward Field to compete in the discus on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. PT. Two weeks ago, Ewen earned Second Team All-America honors in the event at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Also returning to Eugene, Ore., for the second time this month are All-Americans Shelby Houlihan (First Team All-American 1500m & First Team All-American 5000m), Bryan McBride (First Team All American High Jump, Second Team All-American Long Jump), and Brianna Tate (Second Team All-American 400m dash).
Houlihan will compete in the opening round of the 1500m on Friday at 5:55 p.m. PT; McBride will be in action in the high jump that same day at 5:40 p.m. PT, while Tate will run in the opening round of the 400m dash on Thursday at 4:20 p.m. PT.
In the 400m dash, Tate will run against Jasmine Chaney, who earned All-America honors in six events during her Sun Devil career, including twice in the 400m hurdles (2010 & 2011). In 2011, Chaney set the school record in the 400m hurdles at 55.22.
School record holder in the 100m and 200m, Charonda Williams will run in both events this week, with the first round of the 100m dash set for Friday at 5:35 p.m. PT. The 200m dash opening round will run on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. PT. In 2009, Williams ran 11.14 in the 1000m, breaking the 26-year-old record. That same year, she ran 22.55 in the 200m dash, breaking the previous record, which had been set in 1991. Williams also holds ASU’s indoor 60m dash school record at 7.30, and the indoor 200m dash record at 22.89.
Distance standouts Amy (Hastings) Cragg and Desiree (Davila) Linden will run in the 10000m run finals on Thursday at 7:35 p.m. PT. Linden will also be in action in the 5000m run finals on Sunday at 10:20 a.m. The 2006 NCAA Indoor Champion in the 5000m, Cragg was a three-time cross country All-American at ASU and 2004 Pac-10 Champion, while Linden was a 2003 cross country All-American for the Sun Devils.
Also in action on Sunday, Chris Benard, a four-time All-American for the Sun Devils, will compete in the triple jump finals at 12:10 p.m., while Jordan Clarke and Ryan Whiting will be in the shot put finals at 12:20 p.m. PT.
A six-time NCAA Champion at ASU, Whiting holds the school record in the indoor and outdoor shot put, and the discus. The most decorated men’s All-American in program history with 11 honors, Whiting was named the 2010 USTFCCCA National Field Athlete of the Year, the 2010 Track & Field News Collegiate Athlete of the Year, and was a finalist for the 2010 Bowerman Award.
Clarke, an eight-time All-American for the Sun Devils, won four NCAA titles in the shot put, two indoors and two outdoors. His collegiate best at 20.40m (66-11.25) sits at No. 3 in the ASU record book, as does his hammer best at 66.18m (217-01). Clarke’s indoor shot put mark of 20.86m (68-5.25) sits at No. 2 in the ASU record, while his weight throw best at 19.04m (62-5.75) sits at No. 4.
The current and former Sun Devils will be vying for spots on the 2015 IAAF World Championships team set for August 22-30 in Beijing, China.
