Since transitioning to an NCAA Division I program, head coach Greg Powers has found success in the transfer portal. His transfers have historically made an immediate impact on the team in their first season and in the years after. Below is a list of Sun Devil Hockey student-athletes who transferred to Arizona State. Each name is listed under the season of transfer. An asterik indicates the student-athlete is on the 2024-25 Sun Devil Hockey team. (This page is always under construction).
2024-25
Cruz Lucius, winger*
Transferred from Wisconsin (two seasons). Lucius, whose NHL draft rights are held by the Carolina Hurricanes, competed in 19 games for the Sun Devils during his first season in Tempe. Lucius suffered an injury in preseason training that kept him out of the lineup until the second half of the schedule beginning in 2025. He scored his first goal in the maroon and gold at NCHC foe Miami on Feb. 1, 2025. He scored another lamp lighter against Denver to finish the season with two goals and eight assists.

2023-24
Tyler Gratton, forward and team captain
Transferred from Penn State (four seasons). Gratton arrived in Tempe in Summer 2023 and made an immediate impact at his new home. The Pennsylvania native became Sun Devil Hockey's 13th captain in program history after being unanimously elected by his teammates, coaches, and staff. In his fifth year, Gratton scored 12 goals, second-most on the maroon and gold squad. He tallied six power play goals and two game-winning goals in 36 games played. Most memorably, he tallied the overtime game-winning goal over eventual 2024 national champions Denver at Mullett Arena in November 2023.
Brian Chambers, forward
Transferred from UMass-Lowell (four seasons). After four seasons with the RiverHawks, Chambers brought a hard-nose center presence to the Sun Devil lineup in 2023-24. The Massachusetts native led all ASU forwards in time on ice per game and finished the year as one of the top-five scorers for the maroon and gold (4G, 16A). He took over 300 more faceoffs than any other Sun Devil skater and his ownership of the dot made him one of the most successful faceoff winners in the NCAA. He tallied the third-most assists on the team with 16 and his 20 points led the graduate class in scoring.
Brandon Tabakin, defenseman
Transferred from Yale (four seasons). He led the ASU team in plus/minus with +26. This mark ties at third-best in the country through the regular season. It set a new career program record for plus/minus and let Tabakin finish as the top plus/minus in the single season record books for ASU. Went on a four-game point scoring streak including then-No. 2 Denver and Alaska Anchorage (1G, 3A). Scored his first goal of the season against Alaska Anchorage on Nov. 19. He recorded 29 blocks throughout the season. Put up a single game plus/minus high of +3 vs. Clarkson at the Adirondack Winter Invitational and reached it again a week later against Harvard in the Desert Hockey Classic opening game. Reached his 100th NCAA game on Jan. 20, 2024 vs. Augustana.
Cade Alami, defenseman
Transferred from Boston College (two seasons). Collected first assist of the season in 3-0 home win against Alaska Anchorage on Nov. 19, 2023. Tallied his second assist of the year at Colorado College, in ASU's 2-0 shutout victory over the Tigers. Finished his junior season with two assists in 14 games played. His 12 blocks throughout the season is a new career high. Appeared in his first game as a Sun Devil on Nov. 4, 2023 against Stonehill
Alex Young, forward
Transferred from Colgate (three seasons). Scored his first goal of the season against Merrimack on Oct. 14, 2023 at Mullett Arena. Scored his 23rd career multipoint night versus then-No. 9 Providence on Nov. 26, 2023. Tallied the game-winning goal at Colorado College on Dec. 2, 2023. Appeared in all but one possible game for the Sun Devils in his senior season.
2022-23
Robert Mastrosimone, forward
Transferred from Boston University (three seasons). Mastrosimone brought the Mastro Magic to Mullett Arena in his first year at ASU and the inaugural season of Mullett. In his fourth year of college hockey, Mastrosimone tallied his best season yet. The Long Island native led the ASU team in points (42), assists (31), shots (161), game-winning goals (4), power play scoring (18PTS), faceoff percentage (.520). His 42 points ties fellow transfer Colin Theisen's (Notre Dame) record setting 42 points in a single season (2021-22). His 31 assists set a new single season program record, topping fellow transfer James Sanchez's (Michigan) record of 30 assists in 2019-20. Tied the single season record for game-winning goals and set a new record for single season shots with 161. Nominated for the Hobey Baker Award. Scored the overtime game-winning goal against No. 2 Minnesota to give ASU it's highest-ranked win in program history. Scored the game-winning goal against then-No. 6 North Dakota in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Tallied 13 multi-point games in 2022-23, including a four-point night (1G, 3A) in the 6-5 OT win over No. 2 Minnesota.
Ty Jackson, forward*
Transferred from Northeastern (two seasons) with twin brother, Dylan. In his first season as a Sun Devil, he finished as the team's third-leading point-scorer with 23 points (6G, 17A)... Tallied one game-winning goal. Ty set new single season records in his best season of college hockey at ASU.
Dylan Jackson, forward*
Transferred from Northeastern (two seasons) with twin brother, Ty. In his first season as a Sun Devil, he boasted the second-most goals scored on the ASU squad (12G) and finished the year tied for fourth-most points (21) with fellow transfer, Lukas Sillinger. Dylan tallied three power play goals and two game-winning goals. Dylan had the best statistical season of his career at ASU, setting new single season highs in goaks, points, shots, power play goals and blocks. He tied his single season numbers in both assists and game-winning goals.
TJ Semptimphelter, goaltender
Transferred from Northeastern (one season). Semptimphelter was the rock that backstopped ASU in his first season in Tempe. Nominated for both the Mike Richter Award and the Hobey Baker Award, Semptimphelter made 1024 saves, which led the nation through the regular season. He also collected five shutouts (fourth in NCAA in 2022-23) to close in on Mike Richter Award top-five finalist and ASU alum Joey Daccord's program record of eight career shutouts. Tied the ASU program record for most saves in a single game set by Daccord with 53 against then-No. 1 Denver on Dec. 2, 2022. Tallied 13 nights with 30+ saves, six of those are games with 40+ saves. He continued with a hot start in Year 2 as a Sun Devil, tying Joey Daccord's program record for career shutouts (8).
Lukas Sillinger, forward*
Transferred from Bemidji State (two seasons). Sillinger finished his first ASU year as a top-five point-scorer for the maroon and gold. His 11 power play points (4G, 7A) was third on the team. He put up his fourth career three-point night against Lindenwood on Feb. 17, 2023 with two goals and one assists. He tallied five multi-point nights. Set the new program record for most points scored in a single season at 43 points against Alaska Anchorage on Mar. 9, 2024. He extended the record the next night to 48 points after scoring the program's first ever natural hat trick. Second in the NCAA for assists (37). Nominated for the Hobey Baker Award, given annually to the top collegiate player in the country. Named alternate captain in September 2023 along with captain Tyler Gratton and fellow alternates Matthew Kopperud, Ryan O'Reilly, and Ethan Szmagaj.
2021-22
Colin Theisen, forward
Transferred from Notre Dame, team's alternate captain (four seasons). He became one of just 28 NCAA Division I college hockey players in history to play 175 games. A Hobey Baker Award candidate and Senior CLASS Award top-10 finalist, Theisen exudes excellence on and off the ice as he was awarded the captains ‘C’ this season. The graduate transfer scored his first collegiate hat trick against St. Thomas on Oct. 30, 2021. Theisen finished his single year at ASU with 42 points - a new program record - and more than double the points he'd ever tallied in a single season at Notre Dame (precious single season high was 20 points). Theisen set new personal single season records in nearly every category including goals (19), assists (23), shots (114), shots percentage (.167), plus/minus (+10), power play goals (5), short-handed goals (2), and game-winning goals (2). In just one year at ASU, he made an immediate impact - leaping into the program’s single-season record books (#1 in single season points, #1 in single season points per game, #3 in single season goals, #4 in single season goals per game, #6 in single season shorthanded goals, #5 in single season assists, #3 in single season faceoff wins). He led the Sun Devil scoresheet and was a top-10 national scorer. Theisen attained his second degree from ASU as a Master of Sports Law & Business.
Jack Becker, forward
Transferred from Michigan - team captain (four seasons). Becker made an immediate impact during his year in Tempe. He became an assistant captain of his new squad and enjoyed the best season of his career in 2021-22. He completed the 2021-22 season with single season-highs in assists, points, power play goals, and game-winning goals. Through 33 games this season, Becker consistently stayed amongst the top-five scorers on ASU’s roster. He attained his second degree, a Master’s of Legal Studies from Arizona State University this spring.
Tim Lovell, defenseman
Transferred from Boston College (one season). In his first year, Lovell was part of the final group at Oceanside Ice Arena. The playmaking defenseman enjoyed his best statistical season to date with 22 points (4G, 18A), including one power play goal and one game-winning goal through 34 games played. In 2022-23, Lovell notched 18 points (3G, 15A) in 31 games. He was out for a stint due to injury, but he still led all ASU defensemen in point-scoring. Against Colorado College on Oct. 22, 2023, Lovell tied his single game high of three points in a game with one goal and two assists. In his senior season (2023-24), Lovell led all ASU defensemen in points through 36 games with five goals and 32 assists for 37 total points - a mark that ties the program record for points by a defenseman. His 30 assists set a new single season record for assists by a defenseman.
Ben Kraws, goaltender
Transferred from Miami (two seasons). The Kraw Daddy fought for his spot and put up significant minutes for the Sun Devils in his first season in Tempe. The New Jersey native finished the 2021-22 season with 1434.12 minutes and 27 games played, starting 23 of those. He collected a single game high of 49 saves at then-No. 5 Quinnipiac on Nov. 13, 2021, just one save shy of tying Joey Daccord's program record of 50 saves in a single game. He collected a record of 12-11-1 in 2021-22 with a 2.98 goals against average and .907 save percentage. In 2022-23, Kraws earned his first collegiate career shutout at Alaska Anchorage on March 3, 2023. He was the hockey program's first-ever Barrett, The Honors College student-athlete. He graduated from ASU as Magna Cum Laude (3.60 to 3.79 GPA)in May 2023 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business (Law).
Tim Theocharidis, defenseman
Transferred from Bowling Green (three seasons). Theocharidis added a large, heavy presence on the blue line for the Sun Devils. Through 35 games at ASU, he tallied 15 points, tying his single season high. He scored four goals, including an overtime game-winner at Colgate, and 11 assists. He set new personal single season records in blocks (38) and shots (100).
2020-21
Tanner Hickey, defenseman
Transferred from Alabama Huntsville (seasons). Played three seasons as a defenseman for the Sun Devils and suited up in the maroon and gold for 38 games. He finished his NCAA career with 68 games, four goals and 11 assists for 15 points. A warrior on and off the ice, Hickey is in the running for the team’s Iron Man Award year-after-year, given to the hardest worker in the gym. He graduated in May 2023 from ASU with a Bachelor of Science in Communication.
Sean Dhooghe, forward
Transferred from Wisconsin (three seasons). Joined the Sun Devil family in 2020 after three successful seasons at Wisconsin, he completed his college career with 154 games played, 32 goals, 39 assists and 71 total points. He played in 54 games at ASU. His first season with ASU was during the 2020-21 pandemic where ASU played the entire 20-game season on the road as a honorary member of the Big Ten. He boasted 14 power play goals and three game-winning goals in his time as a Sun Devil and former Badger. Dhooghe graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies in May 2022 and continued working on his Masters of Sports Law and Business during the 2022-23 season as a graduate assistant for Sun Devil Hockey.
2019-20
Chris Grando, forward
Transferred from Boston College (two seasons). In his first year as a Sun Devil, Grando enjoyed the best statistical season of his career with 14 points from six goals and eight assists. In the following year, he matched those numbers again perfectly (6G, 8A, 14PTS). He finished his NCAA career with 166 NCAA games from 2017 to 2023 and tallied 26 goals and 39 assists for 65 points. Grando played for the Sun Devils for three seasons, reaching 92 games in the maroon and gold. Heb earned two degrees from ASU: a Bachelor of Science in Communications with a business minor and a Master’s of Legal Studies from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law.
Willie Knierim, forward
Transferred from Miami (two seasons). In his first year at ASU, Knierim enjoyed the best statistical season of his career. In 49 games at Miami, he tallied four goals and five assists for nine points over two years. In his first ASU season, he played in 36 games, scored 15 goals and nine assists for 24 total points. He is in the top-10 in single season goal scoring, goals per game, shorthanded goals, and plus/minus.
Max Prawdzik, goaltender
Transferred from Boston University (four seasons). Prawdzik played in the most single season games of his career while at ASU at nine. He collected a 3-0-0 record.
James Sanchez, forward
Transferred from Michigan (two seasons). In his first year at ASU, Sanchez became the first Sun Devil in program history to reach the 40 point mark in a season. He held that title for two seasons until transfer Colin Theisen reached 42 points in 2021-22 followed by transfer Robert Mastrosimone tying the 42-point mark in 2022-23. That same season, Sanchez finished tied 10th nationall in scoring in the NCAA, recorded a season-high four assists against Wisconsin on Feb. 21, 2020, and compiled 10 multi-point games. In 2019-20, Sanchez was the first ASU player in program history to record 30 assists in a season, held for three years until Mastrosimone notched 31 in 2022-23. He signed at professional contract with Hartford (AHL) on March 7, 2021 to become the sixth Sun Devil to sign a non-NHL professional contract.
2017-18
Gage Hough, forward
Transferred from UMass Lowell (three seasons). Netted his first goal as a Sun Devil in the Ice Vegas Invitational on Jan. 5, 2018 vs. Northern Michigan as part of a two-goal performance. Collected one assist in his hometown return at Nebraska Omaha. Finished the season with two goals and an assist in 14 games played.
2016-17
Dylan Hollman, forward
Transferred from UMass Lowell (one season). After sitting out a year due to NCAA transfer rules, Hollman was named a captain by head coach Greg Powers on June 23, 2016. He was one of just six players to play in all 32 regular season games and he finished his first season as a Sun Devil with five goals and tied for lead in assists with 12. He also compiled five multi-point games during the season, with three coming against ranked teams. Hollman was named captain for the second year in a row heading into his redshirt junior season. In 33 games played, netted three goals and assisted four for seven total points, including a goal in the 7-3 win against Northern Michigan to send the Devils to the Ice Vegas Invitational championship berth.
Robbie Baillargeon, forward
Transferred from Boston University (three seasons). Finished his first and only ASU season tied for team lead in points (21) and assists (12). Compiled a total of seven multi-point games in his final NCAA season. Had his first three-point game (1G, 2A) of the season vs. Colgate on Dec. 2, and first since Feb. 13, 2015 against New Hampshire (0G, 3A) while with BU.
Jake Montgomery, forward
Transferred from Omaha (one season). Totaled two assists in 19 games during his first year in the maroon & gold. Recorded his first multi-point game (2A) of his college career against Colgate on Dec. 3.
2015-16
Ryan Belonger, forward
Transferred from Northeastern (two seasons). Scored the game-winning goal with 34 seconds left against Alaska-Fairbanks on Oct. 10 for the Sun Devils' first NCAA win in program history... Tallied four goals and five assists in 27 games.. Earned an extra year of eligibility with the move to NCAA.
Wade Murphy, forward
Transferred from North Dakota (two seasons). Earned his first assist of the season while taking a shot against no. 9 Notre Dame on 10/7/2016
