Game Notes: Michigan State

The Sun Devil win...
  • Gave ASU consecutive wins over a ranked Michigan State team in back-to-back seasons (ASU defeated #15 MSU in Tempe last season)
  • Marks ASU’s first 3-0 start since going 4-0 in 2016 and just the third 3-0 start since the 2008 season.
  • Gave ASU its first road victory against a Big Ten team since defeating Northwestern in Chicago in 2004.
  • Is just the fifth road victory against a team in the Big Ten in program history (Northwestern-1978/2004, Illinois-1987, Wisconsin 1967). ASU is currently 4-5 in such games with the exception Nebraska, who is currently in the Big Ten but ASU was 0-4 in Lincoln in games played while the Huskers were in the Big 12.
  • Was ASU’s first win in a regular season game it has traveled at least 1,500 miles - East Lansing is 1,625 miles away by air -  since defeating North Carolina in 2003 after traveling 1,870 miles.
  • Improves ASU to 6-10 in the Pac-12 era in road games where it travels at least 1,200 miles.
  • Handed ASU its first road victory over a ranked road team since defeating #13 Miami (Fl) on Sept. 13, 1997 in Florida.
  • Was the fifth consecutive games over ranked non-conference opponents: #18 Michigan State/2019, #15 Michigan State/2018, #8 Notre Dame/2014, #20 Wisconsin/2013, #19 Missouri/2011.
It's Been a While
-ASU held Michigan State to seven points - the lowest scoring output for the Spartans against a non-conference opponent in the regular season since being shutout my Boston College in 1992.
-The 21 points allowed through 3 games are the fewest since a 3-game stretch in 1993 where the Devils allowed a combined 20 points against Washington (17), Cal (0) and UCLA (3). Only the 1985 team (12 combined points: MSU 12, Pacific 0, USC 0) allowed less in 1st 3 games of year.

The Streak Continues
-With the touchdown with under a minute remaining, ASU extended the longest active FBS streak of consecutive games scoring at least seven points to 137 straight. The Sun Devils last scored a touchdown or less when they were shutout, 28-0, against eighth-ranked USC in the 2008 season.

Gimmie Dat
-Aashari Crosswell’s first quarter strip fumble and Tyler Whiley’s ensuing fumble recovery marked the ninth consecutive game the Sun Devil defense had forced a turnover.

Blank Slate
-The Sun Devils entered the weekend as one of six teams nationally (that had played at least two games) to not allow a first half point this season. That number will be down to at least five after Saturday as ASU continued that streak.
-In six regular season non-conference games under Herm Edwards. The Sun Devils have not allowed a first quarter point.
-ASU has held the opponent scoreless in the first quarter in 8 of 16 games under Edwards and defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales and is 7-1 in those games.
-The Sun Devils have not allowed a single point in the first three quarters of any game this season.

Z’s Pedigree
-Defending Pac-12 Special Teams Players of the Week redshirt freshman Cristian Zendejas, son of the all-time great Sun Devil kicker Luis Zendejas, entered the weekend with the most field goals made this season after going a perfect 7-for-7 in the first two games. He continued that streak today, recording the lone points of the first half for either team with a career-long 44-yarder.

A Field Day
-Evan Fields finished with a career-high 13 tackles - six of which were of the solo variety.

Go For It
Jayden Daniels 15-yard rush to save the game improved ASU to 15-of-19 on 4th down conversions under Coach Herm Edwards.
