EUGENE, Ore. - Former Arizona State University standout Amy Hastings became the eighth athlete of 2012 with Sun Devil ties to qualify for the Olympics, winning the 10,000-meter run at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on Friday in Eugene, Ore.
Hastings, who competes for Brooks, clocked a time of 31:58.36 to edge Texas A&M's Natosha Rogers and Nike's Shalene Flanagan who finished in 31:59.21 and 31:59.69, respectively. It was the first American championship of Hastings' career and advanced her to her first-ever Olympic Games courtesy of having already earned the Olympic `A' Standard in the event.
Hastings is still the holder of the Arizona State school record at 10,000 meters with her time of 32:30.37. Hastings ranks as one of the all-time greats to pass through the ranks in the Maroon and Gold, earning seven All-America honors for track and field and three for cross country. Her 10 total All-America honors rank her second in ASU history. Hastings was the 2006 NCAA Champion at 5,000-meters indoors and finished fourth earlier this year at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials.
Hastings will now join her former college roommate and one of her closest friends in London as she will make the trek alongside Desiree Davila, who qualified for the Olympic Marathon courtesy of her second place finish a the U.S. Trials earlier this year.
Hastings' victory marked the close of an eventful opening day of competition at the U.S. Trials at Hayward Field.
Hastings was one of three former Sun Devils in the field in the 10,000-meter run. Alvina Begay took 17th overall in 32:58.63 while Allie Kieffer did not start the race.
In the day's opener, current Sun Devil Anna Jelmini advanced to the finals in the women's discus competition. She currently sits eighth in the standings with a mark of 55.06m (180-7) and will resume the competition on Sunday, June 24.
Charonda Williams, now competing for adidas, also advanced to the semifinals of the 100-meter dash after winning her heat on Thursday in 11.33 - the 12th-fastest time of the preliminary round.
Former Olympian Trevell Quinley finished 19th after the qualifying round with a jump of 7.49m (24-07.00) and did not advance to the finals.
