Football Postgame Quotes v. Colorado (Oct. 7, 2023)

Arizona State Head Coach Kenny Dillingham
On the touchdown drive to tie game:

“The touchdown drive, lot of empty, lot of quick game and Trenton was the distributor. Our guys were feeling the zones and getting open on some option routes, which is a positive. It was a really good job, really proud of these guys for responding. We were in a similar situation last week and we didn’t get that done so to respond in that scenario and drive down the field was a positive.”

On playing to play their strengths:
“Our defense played really well all day, they ended up giving up 295 yards in 72 plays. We outgained them by a hundred yards, we were better on third and fourth down situations. We scored in the red zone but none of that matters, what matters is when the game is on the line. Winning football teams make the plays when the game’s on the line. Because the last two weeks we’ve played winning football in every category but we haven’t won the game and we really got to look at why.”

On how he’s keeping the team up during the bye week:
“I’ve been in this exact scenario. Year one taking over a program, you just can’t find out how to win. Don’t know how to do it yet, you’re just finding a way. Every single time there’s an opportunity, you find a different way to lose. When it clicks, we’re playing winning football. But we’re not winning, which means we’re very, very close. You don’t know when it’s gonna click. You go back to work and you compete to get better, better, better, better, better. The bamboo that nobody can see is going to grow, very simple. You just can’t see it, but the growth is happening.”

On back-to-back home game sellouts:
“I think the last two games here, I would hope the fans could not only see the growth of the program and the direction we're heading, but they can see the fight of our guys and they can see how it's an advantage to have them here. They can see how college football is fun when it's a sold out crowd and that this is a great environment that we can create here. If everybody who showed up the last two weeks shows up again, we can create another really exciting environment, another competitive advantage and we will win football games, we will win a lot of football games. There is zero doubt in my mind that we're going in the right direction. There is zero doubt in my mind that we're going to win at a really, really high level here and I'm really excited for it. But the times of when that's gonna happen, that's just gonna happen when it happens. And so I commend the crowd, commend the fans. I appreciate it. And let's continue to show the support of our guys. I said before the season, through the good and the bad, our guys need the support. Our guys need our fan base. Our guys need butts and seats. Now more than ever, they got to know when they take the field that it still matters. They got to know more than ever that they have the support of the fan base to build this thing the right way and we're getting close, but we're not there yet.”

Arizona State Quarterback Trenton Bourguet
On interacting with the fan base and their importance:

“We appreciate it, obviously we're sorry, we like down, but keep bringing that energy, that juice. It's contagious on third downs when we're rocking on the sideline and then we get the whole crowd rocking. I definitely think that this is a special place. You know, we have a lot of great fans, not just students but local people here too. We're right there and once we start getting those wins, it's even gonna be better.”

Arizona State Defensive Lineman BJ Green
On what they’re telling each other:

“It’s the little things, you got to harp on the little things like earlier in the week, practice, prep, pregame because during those big moments, it's the little things that matter. That's something coach has always told us, those little things show up. You gotta make sure that you harp on those things from the jump. That is one thing that I definitely think we gonna do in the bye-week is just focusing on the little things because like I said before, the little things do matter.”

Arizona State Defensive Lineman Prince Dorbah

On what success means to him coming to Arizona State and where he’s improved:

“Personally, I come from a family where I'm the only person who's gotten this opportunity to play college football. So I've told myself every day since I came here, I'll take advantage of my opportunities and I'm blessed to have great teammates and coaches that are there for me, and give me these opportunities to make these plays. So I'm just blessed to be able to be here. For me, one thing that I told myself I need to get better at would be more consistent. Being consistent every day on what I do on and off the field. That's one thing I am striving to do.”

Colorado Head Coach Deion “Primetime” Sanders:
Opening Statement:

“Wonderful win. Played like hot garbage. And I'm trying to figure this out. Sick of it. I really am. I'm sick of us coming out here and putting forth the effort we put forth in the first half.
We've had really diligent meetings and we're trying to figure this out, ‘cause I'm sick of it. I'm sorry. I'm happy about the win but I'm not happy in the fashion that we won it in. We're better than that. We really are better than that, and we gotta start showing that. I expect to win and I expect to win in a better fashion than that. I'm sick of these consistent holes that we're displaying and the penalties and the things that we're doing. We're so much better. I apologize for my anger today, but I don't accept mediocrity. Maybe you do. Maybe you can live with it. Maybe you sleep with it. Maybe you lie with it. Maybe you're comfortable with it, but I'm not.”

On Colorado WR Javon Antonio making multiple big catches tonight:
“It was awesome. It was awesome because he didn't have a great game last week. But I love his resilience and he bounced back. I believe in him 100-percent. I totally believe in him 100-percent. And I'm glad he got back in there and was able to do what he did because he's a grown man and he's a dog. Plays his butt off. Never complain’s. Just a good kid, man. A really good kid, was raised tremendously right.”

On a moment with Colorado Kicker Alejandro Mata after his game-winning field goal:
“Yeah, I wanted him to do his thing. Mata is Mata. Guys, you didn't believe in Mata. I believe in Mata. Why do you think I brought him here? Mata don't miss. You call a timeout and freeze him all you want. That don't mean nothing to Mata. That's who he is and that's what he always says to me when I walk over to him and give him a hug. He says, ‘I don't miss’, and I love it. So I told him to do your thing. Do your thing. Get your shine on. It's your moment, baby, live it. That's what I told him.”

On how to turn this back into a positive message:
“I'm not changing. So you gotta meet my expectations, and that starts in practice, that starts in film study, that starts in preparation, that starts in coaching, that starts all the way down the board. Ain't just the kids. It's everybody. I have lofty expectations for this team, for this school, for this university. I really do. And we're gonna get there.”

Colorado Quarterback Shedeur Sanders
On what’s going on in his mind while sitting on the bench after repeatedly getting sacked:

“Really just taking accountability of what's going on in the game. You know, I'm holding the ball a little bit too long. Not really going through everything…not basically playing perfect. So that's how it was and then I'm on the sideline frustrated and it's like, it's time, you know it's time to do whatever it takes to win… and by any means, you could take matters in your own hands, you got the will, you got it inside of you…and you know the ins and outs of their defense and to make them dictate and do one thing. So, so the DC had a great game plan versus us, they did a pretty good job going to the ball, covering our guys, but at that point it was ok cool, let's go legendary mode… let's lock in, let's do it.”

On keeping the same energy heading into next week’s game:
“I mean it's repetitive, we know it's the problem so we just got to find a solution. All 11 players gotta do the right thing on each play. It can't be 10 players and one player is not. So it's just… some now I feel like us as players, we gotta get together and… put a stop to the badness that's going on, the slow starts, because y'all knew when the game was close we a second half team. Y’all already knew that. So, I'm sure everybody that been above us before y'all knew the outcome of the game. But, we just can't afford to keep doing that, you know good teams come and, it's gonna catch up.”
