TEMPE, Ariz. – A school-record 12 Arizona State University football student-athletes have been named to Pac-12 All-Academic teams, Conference Commissioner Larry Scott announced Monday.
ASU’s 12 honorees are the most in program history and head coach Todd Graham has mentored 26 conference all-academic selections in the past three seasons. ASU’s four first-team honorees and its seven total selections on the first and second teams both rank as the second most in the conference in 2014 behind Stanford.
Redshirt senior offensive tackles Jamil Douglas and Tyler Sulka, kicker Alex Garoutte and quarterback Taylor Kelly each earned a place on the first team and competed as graduate students during the 2014 season.
Redshirt junior center Nick Kelly, redshirt senior tight end and defensive lineman De’Marieya Nelson and sophomore wide receiver Cameron Smith were named to the second team. Five Devils received honorable mention recognition, including redshirt freshman safety Marcus Ball, redshirt junior quarterback Michael Bercovici, sophomore punter Matt Haack, redshirt freshman tight end Grant Martinez and redshirt sophomore linebacker Viliami (Laiu) Moeakiola.
This is the third career selection for both Kelly and Douglas, and the second career selection for Bercovici and Moeakiola. Kelly earned a spot on the second team in 2013 and an honorable mention nod in 2012, and Douglas was an honorable mention the prior two seasons. Bercovici and Moeakiola were also honorable mention selections in 2013.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
