Inside ASU Football

August 1: Welcome to the 2002 Season!

Archived Columns

In this first installment of "Inside ASU Football," I want to touch on the format we will be using for this season. I, or another member of the athletic staff, will be doing an update every Friday. We would like you to e-mail any questions you might have using the e-mail form below. We will make every attempt to answer your questions and, hopefully, provide some insight as to why certain decisions are made. Without your participation, it becomes more difficult. I think this will offer me the opportunity to address in a straightforward manner some of the issues and situations that come up without having to rely on other avenues to convey the message. Also, I hope this allows you to get to know me better. Obviously, there are some things I can't or won't talk about. For instance, please don't e-mail in that the Head Coach or the offensive play-caller is a dumb jerk. That has already been well documented!

OK, on with the show. This week's topics:

Why is the Camp Tontozona scrimmage this year on Sunday, August 11th instead of Saturday?

After we added the Nebraska game on August 24th, we had to re-arrange our entire August schedule. We will be arriving at Camp T on the afternoon of August 6th. Since the NCAA mandates that our first three days of practice are in shells (helmets and shoulder pads), that makes our first day in pads on Friday, August 9th. We just didn't feel like we would be ready for a full scrimmage the next day. Instead, we will practice twice on Saturday, then scrimmage on Sunday to accommodate those fans that want to visit. We will be returning from Camp T on August 14th and finish our preparation in Tempe. We will be holding a second scrimmage on Friday evening, August 16th and Fan Photo Day on Saturday morning, August 17th.

What is the deal with this year's media guide cover?

Mark Brand and our Sports Information staff have been working on this since last spring. Since the 2002 season is our 25th in the Pac-10 Conference, it was decided that we would use this cover to honor over 86 players, coaches, and moments from that period in ASU Football history. In no way does this ignore what happened prior to the Pac-10 days, or diminish what we hope to accomplish with this year's team. Plenty of photos and information can be found inside the media guide. This is a unique opportunity to honor some of our tradition. Also, the 2002 Football Media Guide is dedicated to the memory of former head coach, Dan Devine, and former student athlete, Dr. Morrison Warren.

That's it for this week. Next week's article will be coming live from Camp Tontozona. Don't forget to e-mail!

GO DEVILS!

Have you ever wished you had the opportunity to ask head coach Dirk Koetter your most pressing question regarding ASU football? Here's your opportunity! Each week throughout the season, Coach Koetter will provide an insider's look at Arizona State football. As a part of this feature, he will take questions from Sun Devil fans and answer them on TheSunDevils.com! While he won't be able to answer every question submitted, he will do his best to get to as many as he can. Submit your question today with the form below!
