Mullett Arena
About Mullett Arena
Welcome to Mullett Arena, the proud home of Sun Devil Ice Hockey.
This state-of-the-art multipurpose building on the ASU campus opened in 2022 and offers fans the best college hockey experience in the country.
Mullett Arena also hosts other athletic events and competitions, including Sun Devil Wrestling, Volleyball and the Valley Suns, the NBA G League affiliate of the Phoenix Suns. Additionally, Mullett serves as a public venue for the university and community to host concerts, comedy shows, conferences, youth competitions and more.
The 5,000-seat, state-of-the-art venue includes two NHL regulation-size ice sheets, 20 luxury suites, a large club lounge and event-level premium club seats. The arena is the new home for Sun Devil Hockey, with more than 8,000 square feet set aside for ASU’s locker room, weight room, lounge and coaches offices.
On the 300-level, a social deck runs the length of the east side of the venue, offering an aerial view of the arena where fans can interact while maintaining sightlines to the competition.
Adjacent to Mullett Arena is the Mountain America Community Iceplex, often called MACI, a community ice rink that serves as a practice ice sheet for the Sun Devil Hockey and the university's four club hockey teams. The MACI sheet is accessible to students, the community, youth and adult ice hockey programs at every level, providing an additional public sheet for youth hockey participation in one of the fastest-growing states in the country.
Contrary to popular belief, the arena honors Donald and Barbara Mullett — two benefactors of ASU — not the hairstyle often associated with hockey players.

Arena history and highlights
Mullett Arena has quickly become a key venue for ASU athletics and community events, while also making history as a temporary NHL venue. The Arizona Coyotes' tenure in Tempe has brought national attention to the arena, and ASU's investment in a dedicated hockey facility marks a major step forward for all hockey in the Southwest.
- Arizona State University announced the arena in November 2020, and began construction in early 2021.
- The project was funded by ASU and private donors, with a reported cost of $134 million.
- The venue is named Mullett Arena in honor of Donald "Donze" and Barbara Mullett, longtime supporters of ASU hockey. The Mullett family has contributed significantly to the university’s hockey program.
- The Sun Devils hosted their first home game at Mullett Arena on Oct. 14, 2022, against Colgate. They defeated the Raiders 2-0, the program's first win in the new arena.
- The Sun Devils went on to win the next five games in a row, including home sweeps of Colorado College and Alaska Anchorage, as well as an upset victory over then-No. 6 North Dakota.
- ASU hosted No. 2 Minnesota Thanksgiving Weekend and earned the program's highest-ranked win in ASU history with a 6-5 overtime victory (Sun Devil Hockey has since beaten a team ranked No. 1). Senior Robert Mastrosimone scored the blockbuster game-winning goal before a sellout Mullett Maniac crowd.
- The Desert Hockey Classic made its Mullett Arena debut. Participating teams include ASU, Air Force, then-No. 6 Boston University, and then-No. 17 Michigan Tech.
- Throughout this inaugural season, the team's student section, the 942 Crew, sold out all 18 games when school was in session. Over a 24-home game span, ASU’s average attendance was 4,791.
- In 2022, the NHL's Arizona Coyotes sought a temporary home while working to build a new arena and entertainment sector in the Phoenix area.
- ASU and the Arizona Coyotes agreed to a deal that allowed the NHL to compete in Mullett Arena for two seasons with the option of a third year.
- To accommodate NHL standards, construction began on a two-story, 15,000-square-foot annex adjacent to the arena. This annex accommodates NHL-quality home and away team dressing rooms, training areas, equipment rooms, nutrition stations, a coaches' workroom, team storage and a fitness room.
- The 2024–25 season marked the beginning of a landmark year, as the Sun Devils kicked off the historic season by celebrating 10 years as an NCAA sport.
- As other Sun Devil teams moved from the Pac-12 to the Big 12, Sun Devil Hockey began its inaugural year in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. Polls projected the team to finish eighth (out of nine) in conference play. Defying the odds, the Sun Devils finished the season in second place and earned home-ice advantage for the playoffs.
- Once again hosting the Desert Hockey Classic, the Sun Devils became the tournament’s back-to-back champions, defeating Cornell 4-0. Junior goaltender Gibson Homer earned the shutout, while Ryan Kirwan won the Desert Hockey Classic's Most Valuable Player after collecting a five-point weekend capped off by four goals and an assist.
- On March 14, 2025, Mullett Arena hosted its first-ever playoff game and secured its first NCHC playoff win as the No. 2 Sun Devils defeated the No. 7-seed Minnesota Duluth, 4-3, in the opening game of the NCHC quarterfinal series.
- The next night, ASU defeated the No. 7-seed Minnesota Duluth, 6-5, in an overtime thriller to clinch the NCHC quarterfinal series sweep, and the Sun Devils advanced to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The crowd at Mullett Arena was eager for an overtime hero, and they got exactly that in Ryan Kirwan, who netted his 25th goal of the season — second-most in the NCAA — to cap off a thrilling comeback and ignite a wild celebration. With that goal, Kirwan set a new single-season program record, surpassing the previous mark of 23 held jointly by Matthew Kopperud and Johnny Walker.
- The Sun Devil ended their best season in program history with a 4-2 loss to No. 3-seed Denver in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff semifinal round on March 22. ASU finished second in the NCHC regular season standings with 47 points.
