Stadium highlights and history

The aquatic center’s formal dedication was held on Oct. 31, 1986, after the Arizona State Board of Regents named it after the late Mona Plummer on March 1, 1985.

Plummer served as the head women’s swim coach for 22 years (1957–79) at ASU and coached the Sun Devils to eight national championships. While at ASU, Plummer tutored nine Olympians and nearly four dozen All-Americans. She was selected the national coach of the year in 1979, as the Sun Devils finished second at the AIAW Championship after winning the 1977 and 1978 titles. ASU captured the national crown from 1967 through 1974.

"She was the premier swimming coach during her era, and her success helped all other women’s sports at Arizona State University prosper,” said former ASU associate athletic director Herman Frazier. “The dedication of our aquatic center could not have gone to a better person.”

Notable events which have been held at the complex include:

  • The WCAA Championship
  • Water polo exhibition between the U.S. National Team and ASU
  • Pac-10 and NCAA Zone E Diving Championships
  • U.S. Junior National Diving Championship
  • Pac-10 and NCAA Zone E Diving Championships
  • Pac-10 Diving Championships

Sun Devil Swim and Dive opened the 2025-26 season with two victories, as the ASU men defeated UNLV’s men’s team 236-60 and the ASU women were victorious 242-57 to open the 2025-26 campaign.

They did so in front of a record crowd, the largest ever at Mona Plummer, as the bleachers overflowed and fans used parking garages as vantage points to watch the Sun Devils sweep the Rebels.
