Capitaine Wins 100 Breast, Freshman Divers Excel Again At Respective Meets

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The second day of the Art Adamson Invitational has come to a conclusion, and for the Arizona State men and women’s swim teams, it proved to be a successful day of competition. Led by junior Thibaut Capitaine, the Sun Devils displayed they can compete in the spotlight.

In the men’s 100 breaststroke, Capitaine swam a time of 54.77 in the preliminary, a time good enough for 4th-place. However, he saved his best for last, swimming a time of 53.97 in the championship round, earning himself a 1st-place finish and a NCAA “B” cut time.

Also earning NCAA “B” cut times was senior Zac Dalby in the 400 IM, sophomore Kat Simonovic in the 200 freestyle, and sophomore Barkley Perry in the 200 freestyle.

Dalby (3:54.30) placed 5th in his championship event, cutting off over 12 seconds from his seeding time (4:06.76).

After finishing 4th in the 200 freestyle preliminary (1:46.98), already a “B” cut time,  Simonovic again earned a “B” cut time in the championship by swimming a time of 1:47.01 as she finished in 7th.

As for Perry, he finished 4th in the 200 freestyle championship (1:37.86), earning 15 points towards ASU’s overall score.

Going into the final day of competition, both Arizona State men and women swim teams sit in 5th-place for the second consecutive day.

Competing in the Texas Invitational from Austin, Texas, the three freshman diving standouts that made the finals on Thursday did so again on Friday.

Beginning with the men’s 3-meter preliminary, David Hoffer notched a score of 352.35, good enough for second-place and a position in the finals. Heikki Makikallio (299.50) also advanced. In the finals, both Hoffer (356.50) and Makikallio (343.70) improved on their scores, going on to finish 5th and 6th, respectively.

In the women’s 1-meter preliminary, Mara Aiacoboae (270.40) finished in the top three before diving her way to a 4th-place finish (289.00) in the championship round later in the night.
