Burr Earns Academic All-America Honors, 10 Net Academic All-Conference Recognition

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State University junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Burr has earned a spot on the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Baseball Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday.

In addition, 10 Sun Devil Baseball student-athletes have garnered Pac-12 All-Academic recognition, Commissioner Larry Scott announced Thursday. ASU’s 10 all-academic honorees are the most for the program in the past 16 seasons and are tied with Stanford for the most in the conference.

Burr, a criminal justice and criminology major with a 3.60 grade point average from Highlands Ranch, Colo., was named to the second team and is one of 33 student-athletes to comprise the three teams, including the sole representative from the Pac-12. He is the 12th different Sun Devil to earn Academic All-American status and the first since outfielder Andy Workman was named to the second team in 2011.

This is the 19th consecutive season ASU has had at least two representatives on Pac-12 All-Academic teams. To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average, be either a starter or significant contributor, and have one full year in residence at their institution.

Burr earned first team honors, infielder Dalton DiNatale and catcher Brian Serven netted second team recognition, and seven student-athletes received honorable mention status, including Jordan Aboites, Chris Beall, Joey Bielek, Darin Gillies, Ryan Kellogg, Colby Woodmansee and RJ Ybarra.  

Seven Sun Devils have taken home all-academic distinction multiple times in their careers, including Burr, who was on the second team in 2014, and DiNatale, a two-time second-team member and communications major.  

Gillies, a right-handed pitcher from Hollister, Calif., is a three-time honorable mention recipient and graduated this past May with a bachelor’s of science degree in criminal justice & criminology.

Four juniors earned honorable mention recognition for the second consecutive season. Aboites, an infielder/right-handed pitcher from Long Beach, Calif., is a communications major, Beall, an infielder/outfielder from Phoenix, is a management major, Kellogg, a left-handed pitcher from Whitby, Ontario, Canada, is majoring in management, and Ybarra, an infielder/designated hitter from Riverside, Calif., is a communications/sociology major.

Three Sun Devils earned all-academic honors in their first year of eligibility. Bielek, a senior first baseman from Scottsdale, Ariz., is a finance major, Serven, a sophomore from Palm Desert, Calif., is a management major, and Woodmansee, a sophomore shortstop from Phoenix, Ariz., is majoring in marketing. 

Twenty-one baseball student-athletes were recognized during the 2014-15 school year as Scholar Ballers®, which honors those who achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher, including 14 in Fall 2014 and 19 in Spring 2015. A total of 24 current baseball student-athletes earned Scholar Baller® recognition in at least one of the past five semesters.
