Burkhart Pitches ASU Past Washington

April 28, 2006

, - It was another Pac-10 pitching battle Friday afternoon as Katie Burkhart fanned 15 while 's Danielle Lawrie struck out 19, as the Sun Devils were just able to edge the Huskies with a 1-0 win. The win improves #7 ASU to 42-7 on the year and 6-4 in Pac-10 play while the #15 Huskies fall to 30-17 and 4-9.

Burkhart's performance was nearly flawless as she allowed only one-hit to Washington all day and added 15 strikeouts to her total of 274 on the season and grabbed her 21st win, while freshman, Danielle Lawrie's 19 strikeouts pushed her season total to 292, second in the all-time single season list in Washington history and setting a new school record for regulation game strikeouts.

Offense on both sides was quiet as ASU tacked only four hits on the board, three of which were doubles from Kaitlin Cochran, Rhiannon Baca and Kim Zadrozny. ASU's sole run came in the seventh as Rhiannon Baca led off the inning with a double down the left line where she was hit home as Kim Zadrozny came back from a 1-2 count with two outs to knock one down the left line for another double giving the Sun Devils the 1-0 lead as UW took their last at-bats.

Burkhart maintained her no-hitter until the seventh when Aimee Minor singled through the left side where she was advanced by a sac bunt. With one out, Burkhart took control again as she struck out Brooke Woodward and Alicia Matthews to end the game and grab the win.

The Sun Devils will continue the weekend on the road as they travel to take on the #1 UCLA Bruins in a two-game series. Game one against the Bruins is set to kick-off at 2 p.m. in LA at Easton Stadium.
