ASU -- Arizona State (19-8, 0-3 Pac-10 and ranked No. 17 Baseball America, No. 15 Baseball Weekly/ESPN Coaches Poll and No. 17 Collegiate Baseball) host Oklahoma (11-8, 1-2 Big 12) in non-conference action for a two-game series at Packard Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. The Devils will also play an exhibition game with Aomori University on Thursday night.

ERNSTER EN FUEGO -- Second baseman Mark Ernster continues to have the hot bat for the Devils and sports a team-leading .457 average at the plate. Hewas honored as the Collegiate Baseball/Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and Pac-10 Player of the Week for his outstanding performance against BYU. For the weekend, Ernster went 11-for-15 (.733) with 11 RBI and five runs scored. He hit a double and two homers and notched a 1.200 slugging percentage for the series. He was perfect in the field with 7 putouts and 10 assists. On Saturday, we went 6-for-6 at the plate becoming the first Sun Devil since Hubie Brooks in 1978 to accomplish the feat. He put together a string of eight consecutive hits which is one shy of the Arizona State record held by Mike Pagel and Hubie Brooks. His six hits in a single game ties him for second all-time at ASU. He is fourth on the squad in RBI (23) and third in hits (37). Ernster is batting .667 with runners in scoring position and .628 with runners on base. He is third on the squad in 2-out RBI with 10.
BEINBRINK BECOMES PAC-10 CAREER RBI LEADER -- Third baseman Andrew Beinbrink (San Diego, Calif.) has become the conference leader in RBI, surpassing Paul Carey (Stanford) who led the league with 220 career RBI. He will likely become ASU's career leader in RBI, surpassing current Sun Devil leader Clay Westlake (1973-76). The 6-3 infielder/outfielder has 237 RBI and needs just 13 RBI to become the all-time RBI leader (Beinbrink has averaged 66 RBI over the past three years). He is fifth all-time in runs scored with 203 and need 33 runs to become the career leader. With his 65 career doubles, he is third all-time at ASU (Westlake is the leader with 85 career doubles and currently ranks sixth in the conference. Beinbrink could finish his career in the top five in seven of 10 offensive categories at Arizona State. The two-time first-team all-conference selection leads the team in multiple-hit games (15) and tied for first in multiple RBI games with 10. His .448 batting average is second on the squad(among starters) and his 47 hits, six homers and 12 doubles leads the team. Beinbrink is batting .488 with runners in scoring position.
THE HIT MAN -- Returning junior All-American Willie Bloomquist (Port Orchard, Wash.) ran his hitting streak to 20 games before going 0-for-5 vs. Sranford on Saturday. It is the longest hitting streak of his college career. He leads the squad in multiple-RBI games with10 and second in multiple-hit games with 14. He has drawn a team-leading 28 walks as well as 40 runs scored. Bloomquist is batting .491 as a leadoff batter and is batting .467 with runners in scoring position. Bloomquist is second on the team in two-out RBI with 13 on the year. He has hit safely in 24 of 27 games this season. He was selected to both Baseball America's (second-team) and Collegiate Baseball's (third-team) preseason All-American teams. His 18 career triples ranks him seventh all-time in the Pac-10 (the record is 29).
WALDRIP LEADS PITCHING STAFF -- Junior transfer Will Waldrip (Flagstaff, Ariz.) continues to lead the Arizona State pitching staff . Waldrip leads the staff in wins (5), complete games (3), innings pitched (56.0) and strikeouts (57). Versus Stanford on Firday, he picked up the loss going 3.1 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 K. It was his shortest outing to date. He became the first ASU pitcher since Doug Henry in 1983 to post back-to-back complete game shutouts earlier this year. Primarily an infielder at Brigham Young, Waldrip logged only 17.2 inning pitched last year for the Cougars. After transferring to ASU, he became a full-time pitcher. Waldrip pitched 21.1 consecutive scoreless innings before giving up his first run of the season in the third inning of Saturday's game vs. Howard He has allowed only two homeruns through eight starts and is holding opponent batters to a .220 average.

SITZMAN STEALS THE SHOW -- Junior outfielder Jay Sitzman stole his team-leading 21st base this weekend vs. Stanford. Sitzman's batting average of .403 puts him in the .400 club along with Beinbrink and Ernster. During His 32 runs is third on the squad and his 31 hits is fourth. He has recroded seven multiple-hit games as well as four multiple-RBI games this year. He has notched seven 2-out RBI and is batting .457 with the bases empty. He sports a .667 average as a leadoff hitter.

THE NORTH AND SOUTH --This season the Pacific-10 Northern and Southern Divisions will combine and play a 24-game schedule. Nine of the conference schools will field baseball teams (Arizona State, Arizona, California, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington and Washington State). Each team will play the other member schools in a three-game series either home or away. ASU will play in-state rival Arizona six times, however only one of the series will count in conference play.

Pat Murphy now in his fifth season at Arizona State after spending seven years at Notre Dame, has left his mark on Arizona State baseball. In his first year, Murphy guided ASU to a 34-21 record and put together the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. In 1996, he directed ASU to a 35-21 record and a No. 25 final ranking by Baseball America. The 1997 season marked ASU's return to postseason play as ASU went 3-2 in the Atlantic Regiona, narrowly missing out on a trip to Omaha. The Devils finished with a 39-22 record and a No. 11 ranking by Baseball America and No. 14 ranking by Collegiate Baseball. Murphy has also started the Pitch-by-Pitch Baseball Academy which holds baseball camps and clinics year round, not only in Phoenix, but around the country as well. Last season, he was honored as Baseball America's Coach of the Year after guiding the Devils to a second-place showing at the College World Series. The '98 squad went 41-23, 18-11 (3rd) in conference. They won the Midwest Regional with a 3-1 victory over Georgia Tech to advance to the CWS for the first time since 1994.
The Syracuse, N.Y., native's Notre Dame teams recorded 45 or more wins in six of seven seasons and advanced to the finals of an NCAA Regional each of the last three seasons.
He also has international coaching experience, guiding the Dutch National Team to the European championship in the summer of 1987, and helping to develop baseball in Australia as a state manager in New South Wales in 1984.

Murphy is the first coach in the era of aluminum bats to have his players practice exclusively with wood bats in practice.
Murphy has never had a player declared ineligble for a season.
